Mt.04:01. After this, the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. There he was tempted by the Slanderer.
COMMENT: Slanderer is a more descriptive translation than "Devil."
Mt.04:02. Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights. After this, he was hungry.
Mt.04:03. Then the tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
Mt.04:04. Jesus answered, "It is written, 'Man does not live on bread alone. Rather he also lives by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.'"
COMMENT: Living by the word of God can mean putting into practice the things we read in the Bible. However, this also means that the word of God determines our lives. God gives us breath, strength, health, and all things. God's word determines life and death.
Mt.04:05. After this, the Slanderer took him to the holy city. The Slanderer placed him on the pinnacle of the temple.
Mt.04:06. Then the Slanderer said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written that he will command his angels for your sake. In their hands, they will lift you up. Otherwise, you might strike your foot against a stone."
Mt.04:07. Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'"
Mt.04:08. Again the Slanderer took him to a very high mountain. From there he showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them.
COMMENT: This is only possible on a flat earth. If this were merely a vision of all the kingdoms of the world, it would not be necessary to bring him to a very high mountain. The entire Bible teaches a geocentric (earth-centered) cosmology. The earth is stationary (not moving), flat, and covered by a dome-like structure. Inside the dome, the sun, moon, and stars rotate around the earth. Planets are "wandering stars" (Jude 13). The universe most likely resembles a snow globe.
Mt.04:09. Then the Slanderer said to him, "I will give you all these if you kneel down and worship me."
COMMENT: God is absolutely sovereign over all his creation. He does all his will. However, he has temporarily given the Slanderer (Satan) authority during this present evil eon. Paul and John teach that Satan is the god of this eon and that the whole world is obedient to the evil one. Therefore, Satan has spoken partial truth here. He does have authority in a relative sense (from the viewpoint of God's creation), but he has no authority in an absolute sense (from the viewpoint of God). Therefore, we must never trust or admire the rulers and famous people of this eon. Satan is most likely the source of their power. Even the people who seem good and moral often commit evil deeds in secret. In 2 Corinthians, Paul teaches that Satan and his servants disguise themselves as angels of light and morality.
Mt.04:10. Then Jesus said to him, "Satan, go away. For it is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God, and give divine service to him only.'"
Mt.04:11. After this, the Slanderer departed from him. Then angels came and ministered to Jesus.
Mt.04:12. But when he heard that John was put in jail, he went to Galilee.
Mt.04:13. After this, he left Nazareth. Then he came to Capernaum and stayed there. This was next to the sea in the areas that surrounded Zebulun and Naphtali.
Mt.04:14. This was in order to fulfill the word spoken through Isaiah the prophet. He said,
Mt.04:15. The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, the other side of the Jordan River, Galilee of the Gentiles --
COMMENT: The word translated "Gentiles" can also be translated as "nations." The Truth Discovery Version currently adopts the word "nations." However, the Truth Simplified Version adopts the word "Gentiles." The Truth Simplified Version did this in order to make it easy to distinguish between Jews and non-Jews. Gentiles are not Jews. However, we have to be careful. In Paul's latter letters (Ephesians to Philemon), this word sometimes means "nations." In such a case, the word "nations" includes both Jews and Gentiles. The context determines the meaning of this word.
Mt.04:16. A light has arisen on the people who sat in death's land and shadow.
Mt.04:17. From that time, Jesus began to proclaim, "Have a change-of-mind. For the kingdom of the heavens is near."
Mt.04:18. When Jesus walked beside the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother. They were casting a net into the sea. For they were fishermen.
Mt.04:19. He said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishermen of people."
Mt.04:20. Then they immediately abandoned their nets and followed him.
Mt.04:21. When he went on further, he saw to two other brothers Jacob the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in the boat with their father Zebedee. They were repairing their nets. Then he called out to them.
Mt.04:22. Then they immediately left the boat and their father, and they followed Jesus.
Mt.04:23. Jesus went all around Galilee. He was teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom. He was also healing everybody's diseases and sicknesses.
COMMENT: "Good news" is often translated as "gospel" in other Bible translations.
Mt.04:24. Then the news about him went out to all of Syria. Therefore, they brought to him everyone who was suffering. Some people had illnesses or various diseases. Some people were undergoing painful trials. Other people were demon-possessed, or suffering from epilepsy or paralysis. He healed all of them.
COMMENT: The Greek word basanosis and its cognates (words based on the same root) often translated as "torment" or "torture." However, such a translation is only partially true. It is torture, but the torture has a purpose. Originally, this word was used when testing the quality of metals. The metal was heated and then tested with a touchstone. This imagery can be found in Malachi 3:3. The Lord is the refiner and he purifies. When the Lord torments a person, it is to correct, refine, or purify them. In this verse, the painful trial is either illness or oppression of some sort.
Mt.04:25. Many crowds followed him from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and the other side of the Jordan River.
Mt.05:01. When he saw the crowds, he went up into a mountain. Then he sat down, and his disciples came to him.
COMMENT: The following teachings are directed toward Jesus' disciples. He teaches them the rules and customs of the future kingdom of the heavens.
Mt.05:02. He opened his mouth and taught them. He said,
Mt.05:03. "Blessed are the people who are poor in spirit. Their inheritance is the kingdom of the heavens.
COMMENT: Their inheritance is from the heavens. Their inheritance has its origin from the heavens. In order to understand the importance of this, see the comment for Matthew 5:5.
Mt.05:04. Blessed are the people who mourn. They will be comforted.
Mt.05:05. Blessed are the people who are meek. They will inherit the earth.
COMMENT: The kingdom of Israel will be on earth. In other words, the inheritance of the Jews and Gentiles (Gentiles who share in the spiritual things of the Jews) is the earth. This differs from the inheritance of the people in Paul's later letters. In those letters, he teaches that a believer's citizenship exists in the heavens. He also says that a believer has been raised to the heavens together with Christ. However, in an ultimate sense, it can be said that there is only one kingdom of God. All are brothers and sisters in that kingdom. Some may have different callings and positions, but they are still members of the same kingdom, regardless of whether it is manifest on earth or in heaven. God has one house, but, but his house has many rooms.
Mt.05:06. Blessed are the people who hunger and thirst for righteousness. They will be satisfied.
Mt.05:07. Blessed are the people who are merciful. They will receive mercy.
Mt.05:08. Blessed are the people who are clean in heart. They will see God.
Mt.05:09. Blessed are the people who are peacemakers. They will be called the sons of God.
Mt.05:10. Blessed are the people who are persecuted on account of righteousness. Their inheritance is the kingdom of the heavens.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 5:3.
Mt.05:11. Blessed are you when you are reviled, persecuted, slandered, or lied about on account of me.
Mt.05:12. Rejoice and be joyful. For you will have a great reward in the heavens. For in this manner people persecuted the prophets before you.
COMMENT: See 1 Peter 1:4. Their inheritance is the earth, but their inheritance is preserved in the heavens.
Mt.05:13. You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be salted again? In such a case, it is good for nothing except to be cast outside and trampled on by people.
Mt.05:14. You are the light of the world. A city located on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Mt.05:15. People do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand, and it shines on all the people in the house.
Mt.05:16. Therefore, let your light shine before people. If you do this, they will see your good works and glorify your Father who is in the heavens.
Mt.05:17. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill.
Mt.05:18. Truly, I say to you that not even a single letter or word will disappear from the law until everything is fulfilled.
Mt.05:19. Therefore, if anyone disobeys the least of these commandments and teaches others to be disobedient, he will be called the least in the kingdom of the heavens. But if anyone does them and teaches them, he will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens.
Mt.05:20. For I say to you that unless your righteousness should greatly surpass the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Mt.05:21. You heard that it was said to the ancestors, 'You must not murder.' Whoever murders is subject to judgment.
Mt.05:22. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Also, whoever calls his brother an 'idiot' will be subject to the Sanhedrin. And whoever calls his brother a 'fool' will be subject to the Valley of Hinnom of fire.
COMMENT: Geenna is often transliterated as "Gehenna." It is also sometimes translated as "hell." However, Gehenna refers to the Valley of Hinnom, which is located just below Jerusalem. It is an actual place, in which fires burned and where sacrifices of idolatry were once made. Some people say that it had become a place to burn the garbage of the city. Others say that it was a burial spot for criminals. However, the important thing is that Jesus is teaching that it will be a place where the bodies of criminals will be cast. This is an actual place. It is not "hell" or a "place of eternal torment." It is definitely an accursed place, but the concept of it being a place of eternal torment is not true. Jesus' contemporaries would have no concept of eternal hell or eternal torment. The Old Testament teaches nothing about eternal torment, so they would have not interpreted Jesus' words that way. There is a judgment of the dead, and there is punishment, but it is not eternal and it does not happen until the physical resurrection of the body.
Mt.05:23. Therefore, if you offer your gift on the altar, but then remember that your brother has something against you,
Mt.05:24. leave your gift there in front of the altar, and go away. First make peace with your brother, and then come back to offer your gift.
Mt.05:25. When you are on the road together with your accuser, quickly make peace with him. Otherwise, your accuser will deliver you over to the judge, and the judge will deliver you over to the officer, and then you will be cast into jail.
Mt.05:26. Truly I say to you, you will never come out of there until you pay back the last penny.
Mt.05:27. You heard that it was said, 'You must not commit adultery.'
Mt.05:28. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a married woman in order to desire her has already made her an adulteress in his heart.
COMMENT: Gynē should be translated as "married woman" in this context. In addition to "woman," "wife" is a common translation of this word. Adultery cannot be committed unless one of the participants is married. The same word is used in verse 31 where it is definitely referring to a "wife." Sexual desire toward a woman is not a sin. However, coveting and desiring another man's wife is a sin.
Mt.05:29. If your right eye offends you, tear it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body cast into the Valley of Hinnom.
COMMENT: This does not apply now, but it will apply after the kingdom is established.
Mt.05:30. If your right hand offends you, cut if off and cast it from you. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than to have your whole body go into the Valley of Hinnom.
Mt.05:31. It was said, 'Whoever wants to divorce his wife must give her a document of divorce.'
Mt.05:32. I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of prostitution, makes her commit adultery. Also, whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
COMMENT: Porneia means "prostitution."
Mt.05:33. You also heard that it was said to the ancestors, 'Do not swear falsely. You must pay your oaths to the Lord.'
Mt.05:34. But I say to you, do not swear at all. Do not swear by heaven. For it is the throne of God.
Mt.05:35. Do not swear by the earth. For it is the footstool of his feet. Do not swear by Jerusalem. For it is the city of the great king.
Mt.05:36. Do not swear by your head. For you are not able to make one hair white or black.
Mt.05:37. Let your word be 'Yes, yes,' 'No, no.' Anything that exceeds these words comes out of the wicked one.
Mt.05:38. You heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye,' and 'A tooth for a tooth.'
Mt.05:39. But I say to you, do not oppose the wicked one. Whoever strikes your right cheek, turn to him your other cheek also.
Mt.05:40. Also, if anyone wants to sue you in order to take your shirt, give him your coat also.
Mt.05:41. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go two miles with him.
Mt.05:42. Give to the person who asks you, and do not reject the person who wants to borrow from you.
Mt.05:43. You heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor' and 'Hate your enemy.'
Mt.05:44. But I say to you to love your enemies and to pray for the people who persecute you.
Mt.05:45. By doing this you will become sons of your Father who is in the heavens. He causes his sun to rise on wicked people and good people. He makes it rain on righteous people and the unrighteous people.
Mt.05:46. If you love the people who love you, what reward will you receive? Tax collectors do the same thing, don't they?
Mt.05:47. If you greet your brothers only, what special thing are you doing? The Gentiles do the same, don't they?
Mt.05:48. Therefore be perfect just like your heavenly Father is perfect."
Mt.06:01. "Do not do your good deeds before people in order to be seen by them. Otherwise, you will receive no reward from your Father who is in the heavens.
Mt.06:02. Therefore whenever you give a donation, do not proclaim it in the synagogues and in the streets just like the hypocrites do. They do it so that in order to receive glory from people. I truly say to you that they have already received their reward.
Mt.06:03. When you give a donation, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.
Mt.06:04. This way your donations will be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret, will reward you.
Mt.06:05. Whenever you pray, do not be as the hypocrites. They love to pray while standing in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by people. I truly say to you, they have already received their reward.
Mt.06:06. Whenever you pray, enter into your personal room. Shut the door and pray to your Father who is in hiding, and he will reward you.
Mt.06:07. When you pray, do not keep repeating the same words just as the Gentiles do. They think that they will be heard on account of their many words.
Mt.06:08. Therefore, do not be like them. For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Mt.06:09. Therefore, pray like this: 'Our Father who is in the heavens, let your name be treated as holy.
Mt.06:10. Let your kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth just as it is done in heaven.
COMMENT: The expectation of the Jews is a kingdom on earth. There is much prophecy in the Old Testament about this earthly kingdom. It differs from the thousand-year reign of Christ.
Mt.06:11. Give us today our daily bread.
Mt.06:12. And forgive us our debts just as we also forgive our debtors.
Mt.06:13. And do not bring us into temptation, but rescue us from the wicked one.'
Mt.06:14. For if you forgive people their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
COMMENT: This differs completely with Ephesians 4:32. Things differ because of the different administrations of God.
Mt.06:15. But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.
COMMENT: This verse teaches that God is the Father of all men. He is the Father of the people who are forgiven, and he is the Father of the people who are not forgiven.
Mt.06:16. Whenever you fast, do not make yourself look sad just like the hypocrites. For they make their faces ugly because they want people to know that they are fasting. I truly say to you, they have already received their reward.
Mt.06:17. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.
Mt.06:18. This way people will not know that you are fasting, but your Father who is in hiding will know, and your Father who sees in hiding will reward you.
Mt.06:19. Do not store up treasures for yourself on the earth. Earthly treasures are destroyed by moths and corrosion, and they are stolen by thieves.
Mt.06:20. But store up treasures for yourself in heaven. Heavenly treasures are not destroyed by moth or corrosion, and they are not stolen by thieves.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 5:3.
Mt.06:21. For the location of your treasure will also be the location of your heart.
Mt.06:22. The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is pure, your whole body will be shining.
Mt.06:23. But if your eye is wicked, your whole body will be dark. Therefore, if the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
Mt.06:24. No one can serve two lords. For he will hate one and love the other, or he will obey one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Mt.06:25. Therefore, I say to you, do not worry about your soul. Do not worry about what you will eat or drink. Do not worry about what clothes you will put on your body. The soul is more important than food, and the body more important than clothes, isn't it?
Mt.06:26. Observe the birds of heaven. They do not sow or reap or gather into storehouses. But your heavenly Father gives them food. You are worth more than they are, aren't you?
Mt.06:27. Who among you can extend his life by worrying?
Mt.06:28. Why do you worry about clothing? Observe the lilies of the field. Look at how they grow. They do not labor or spin.
Mt.06:29. I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these.
Mt.06:30. The grass of the field exists today, but tomorrow it is cast into an oven. Nevertheless, God clothes it in this manner. Will he not do much more for you, you of little faith?
Mt.06:31. Therefore, do not worry, and do not say, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'
Mt.06:32. For the Gentiles seek all these things. Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
Mt.06:33. But first seek the kingdom and its righteousness. Then all these things will be given to you.
Mt.06:34. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will worry about itself. Sufficient for the day is its own evil."
Mt.07:01. "Do not judge others. This way you will not be judged.
Mt.07:02. For you will be judged according to how you judge others. Also, you will be treated according to how you treat others.
Mt.07:03. Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the beam in your own eye?
Mt.07:04. Also, how can you say to your brother, 'Let me cast out the speck that is in your eye'? Do you not see the beam in your own eye?
Mt.07:05. Hypocrite, first cast out the beam that is in your own eye. Then you will see clearly to cast out the speck in your brother's eye.
Mt.07:06. Do not give holy things to dogs. Also, do not cast your pearls in front of pigs. Otherwise, they will trample on them with their feet, and then turn toward you and tear you apart.
Mt.07:07. Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you.
Mt.07:08. For everyone who asks will receive. Also, the person who seeks will find. And the door will be opened to the person who knocks.
Mt.07:09. If your son asks for a piece of bread, will you give him a stone?
Mt.07:10. If he asks for a fish, will you give him a snake?
Mt.07:11. Even though you are wicked, you know how to give good gifts to your children. Therefore, how much more will your Father who is in the heavens give good things to the people who ask him?
Mt.07:12. Therefore, do for others what you want to be done for you. This is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets.
Mt.07:13. Enter through the narrow gate. The reason is because destruction's gate and way is wide and spacious, and there are many who enter through it.
Mt.07:14. Life's gate and way are narrow and constricted, and there are few who find it.
Mt.07:15. Be careful of false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but they are vicious wolves on the inside.
Mt.07:16. You will know them based on their fruits. You know that people do not gather grapes from thorns, and they do not gather figs from thistles.
Mt.07:17. Therefore, every good tree produces good fruit. But a rotten tree produces bad fruit.
Mt.07:18. A good tree is not able to produce bad fruit, and a rotten tree is not able to produce good fruit.
Mt.07:19. Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and cast into fire.
COMMENT: This shows the severeness of judgment in the kingdom.
Mt.07:20. Therefore, you will know them based on their fruits.
Mt.07:21. Not all people who say to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter into the kingdom of the heavens. The people who will enter it will be the people who do the will of my Father who is in the heavens.
Mt.07:22. Many people will say to me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name? Didn't we cast out demons in your name? Didn't we do many powerful works in your name?'
Mt.07:23. And then I will declare to them that 'I never knew you. Depart from me, workers of lawlessness!'
Mt.07:24. Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and does them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Mt.07:25. And the rain fell and the rivers came and the winds blew and struck that house. But it did not fall because it was built on the rock.
Mt.07:26. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Mt.07:27. And the rain fell and the rivers came and the winds blew and stuck that house. And it fell, and the collapse of it was huge.
Mt.07:28. When Jesus finished saying these things, the crowds were astonished at his teaching.
Mt.07:29. For his teaching was unlike the scribes. He taught them with authority.
Mt.08:01. When he came down from the mountain, many crowds followed him.
Mt.08:02. Then a leper approached him and worshiped him. The leper said, "Lord, if you are willing, you are able to cleanse me."
Mt.08:03. Then he stretched out his hand and touched him. He said, "I am willing! Be cleansed." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Mt.08:04. Then Jesus said to him, "Do not tell anyone. But go to the priest and show yourself to him. As a testimony to them, offer the gift that Moses commanded."
Mt.08:05. When he entered into Capernaum, a centurion approached him and begged him.
Mt.08:06. He said, "Lord, my servant is bedridden in my house. He is a paralytic and he is undergoing a painful trial."
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 4:24.
Mt.08:07. Jesus says to him, "I will come to heal him."
COMMENT: Jesus was only sent to the people of Israel. (Matthew 15:24). However, in this case the Jews asked him to help this Gentile (Luke 7:4).
Mt.08:08. Then the centurion answered, "Lord, I am not worthy enough for you to enter my house. Just say the word and my servant will be healed.
Mt.08:09. For I also am a man who has been put under authority. I have soldiers under my authority. I say to one soldier, 'Go,' and he goes. I say to another, 'Come,' and he comes. And I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
Mt.08:10. When Jesus heard this, he marveled. Then he said to the people who were following him, "I truly say to you that I have not found anyone in Israel with as much faith as this centurion.
COMMENT: Likewise, Jesus praised the faith of the Canaanite woman (Matthew 15:28).
Mt.08:11. But I say to you that many people will come from the east and west, and they will dine with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens.
COMMENT: Jesus is referring to Gentiles entering the kingdom. This would be consistent with what James says (Acts 15:13-17).
Mt.08:12. Yet the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness. There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth there."
COMMENT: Even though Israel is the heir of the kingdom, their rejection is prophesied. The kingdom will be ruled by the little flock chosen by Jesus (Luke 12:32), and many Gentiles will also enter into it. But many of the highly reputed Jews (religious leaders, etc.) will be cast out of it. Paul speaks concerning this rejection in Romans 11. He also says that it is only temporary.
Mt.08:13. Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go. Let it happen to you just as you have believed." And the servant was healed in that hour.
Mt.08:14. After this, Jesus came into Peter's house and he saw Peter's mother-in-law who was bedridden. She had a fever.
Mt.08:15. Then Jesus touched her hand, and the fever departed from her. Then she got up and served him.
Mt.08:16. When evening came, they brought to Jesus many people who were demon-possessed. He cast out the demons with his word. And he healed all the people who had illnesses.
Mt.08:17. This happened in order to fulfill the word spoken through Isaiah the prophet. He said, "He himself received our sicknesses and he bore our diseases."
Mt.08:18. When Jesus saw the crowds, he gave an order to depart to the other side.
Mt.08:19. After this, one scribe approached him. He said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
Mt.08:20. Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of heaven have nests. But the Son of Man has no where to lay his head."
Mt.08:21. Then another disciple said to him, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."
Mt.08:22. But Jesus said to him, "Follow me. Let dead people bury their own dead people."
Mt.08:23. When he entered the boat, his disciples followed him.
Mt.08:24. Then a big earthquake occurred in the sea. As a result, the boat was covered by waves. But he was asleep.
Mt.08:25. Therefore, his disciples approached him, and they woke him up. They said, "Lord, save us! We are going to die!"
Mt.08:26. Therefore, he said to them, "Why are you cowardly, you of little faith?" Then, he got up, and he rebuked the winds and the sea. After this, the everything became very tranquil.
Mt.08:27. But the men marveled and said, "What manner of man is this? The winds and the sea obey him!"
Mt.08:28. Then he came to the land of the Gadarenes on the other side. Then two demon-possessed people came out of the tombs and met him. They were very savage. No one was strong enough to pass through that way.
Mt.08:29. Then they cried out and said, "We have nothing to do with you, Son of God! Did you come here before the appointed season in order to put us through a painful trial?"
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 4:24.
Mt.08:30. But there was a herd of pigs afar off. They were eating.
Mt.08:31. Therefore, the demons begged him and said, "If you cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
Mt.08:32. Then he said to them, "Go." Therefore, they went out and entered into the pigs. After this, the whole herd ran down the steep slope into the sea, and they died in the waters.
Mt.08:33. The people who were giving food to the pigs ran away, and they went into the city. Then they reported everything, including what happened to the demon-possessed people.
Mt.08:34. After this, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to depart from their region.
Mt.09:01. After this, he got into a boat and traveled to his own city.
Mt.09:02. Then they brought to him a person who was paralyzed and bedridden. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed person, "Have courage, child. Your sins are forgiven."
Mt.09:03. Then some of the scribes said among themselves, "This one blasphemes."
Mt.09:04. But Jesus knew their thoughts, and he said to them, "Why do you think evil things in your hearts?
Mt.09:05. For is it easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?
Mt.09:06. But I will show to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Then he said to the paralyzed person, "Get up. Pick up your bed, and go to your home."
Mt.09:07. Then he got up, and he went to his house.
Mt.09:08. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid. And they glorified God who had given such authority to people.
Mt.09:09. After this, Jesus was passing through, and he saw a man called Matthew sitting at a tax-collection place. Then he said to him, "Follow me." Therefore, he got up and he followed him.
Mt.09:10. After this, he was dining in the house, and many tax collectors and sinners came, and they dined together with Jesus and his disciples.
Mt.09:11. When the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
Mt.09:12. But, when Jesus heard this, he said, "Healthy people do not need a doctor. But sick people do need a doctor.
Mt.09:13. But go and learn what this means. 'I want mercy instead of sacrifice.' I did not come to call righteous people. I came to call sinners."
Mt.09:14. Then the disciples of John approached him and said, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?"
Mt.09:15. Then Jesus said to them, "The friends of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them. Then they will fast.
Mt.09:16. No one puts a new cloth on an old piece of clothing. For the new cloth will stretch the garment, and the tear will become worse.
Mt.09:17. No one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wineskins will burst and the wine will spill and the wineskins will be destroyed. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."
Mt.09:18. When he was saying these things to them, one of the rulers came and worshiped him. He said, "My daughter has just died. But come and place your hand on her so that she may live."
Mt.09:19. Then Jesus and his disciples got up and followed him.
Mt.09:20. Then a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years approached him from behind, and she touched the edge of his clothing.
Mt.09:21. For she said in herself, "If I can touch even his garment, I will be saved."
Mt.09:22. But Jesus turned around and saw her. He said, "Have courage, daughter. Your faith has saved you." And the woman was healed immediately.
Mt.09:23. And Jesus came into the house of the ruler, and he saw flutists and a disorderly crowd.
Mt.09:24. He said, "Go away. The girl did not die. She is sleeping." Then they ridiculed at him.
Mt.09:25. But when the crowd left, he entered and grabbed her hand. Then the girl got up.
Mt.09:26. And this news was reported throughout the whole land.
Mt.09:27. After this, when Jesus passed by there, two blind people followed him crying out. They were saying, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!"
Mt.09:28. When he came into the house, the blind people approached him. Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I can do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord."
Mt.09:29. Then he touched their eyes. He said, "Let it happen to you according to your faith."
Mt.09:30. And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly commanded them. He said, "Do not tell this to anyone."
Mt.09:31. But they went out and they told everyone in the whole land about him.
Mt.09:32. When they were leaving, people brought to Jesus a mute man who was demon-possessed.
Mt.09:33. After the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke. The crowds were surprised. They said, "We have never seen anything like this before in Israel!"
Mt.09:34. But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the ruler of demons."
Mt.09:35. After this, Jesus went around all the cities and the villages. He was teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom. He was also healing every disease and every illness.
Mt.09:36. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were weary and dejected. They were like sheep that had no shepherd.
Mt.09:37. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is great, but the workers are few.
Mt.09:38. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest. Ask him to send out workers into his harvest."
Mt.10:01. After this, he called his twelve disciples. He gave them authority over unclean spirits. They had to the power to cast them out. He also gave them authority to heal every disease and every illness.
Mt.10:02. The names of the twelve apostles were as follows. Simon who was called Peter was first, then Andrew his brother, Jacob of Zebedee, and John his brother,
Mt.10:03. Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector, Jacob of Alphaeus and Thaddeus,
Mt.10:04. Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
Mt.10:05. Jesus sent out these twelve men, and he commanded them and said, "Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into a Samaritan city,
Mt.10:06. but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
COMMENT: Jesus was sent exclusively to Israel. There was no commandment to evangelize Gentiles until Matthew 28:20. However, even this command is future. Even up to Acts 11:19, it was not the custom of the Jews to speak the word of God to Gentiles; there were a couple exceptions such as was the case of Cornelius. Eventually, a change occurred that permitted Gentiles to hear the word of God and to be saved. This will be described in more detail later. For now, however, it should be noted that words of Jesus are primarily for the Jews. Of course, his words have a spiritual application that is suitable for all humanity, and we all should apply his words to our life, but it is important never to forget that Jesus' audience was exclusively Jewish.
Mt.10:07. But when you go, proclaim and say, 'The kingdom of the heavens is near.'
Mt.10:08. Heal the sick people. Raise the dead people. Cleanse the lepers. Cast out demons. You have received freely, so give freely.
COMMENT: Miracles still occur today. But today's miracles almost never occur with the frequency and magnitude that they did during the days of Jesus and his apostles. Miracles were primarily a sign for the Jews during their administration. We live in an age of faith, not visual miracles. God does miracles today, but they are mostly done in secret and in a still small voice.
Mt.10:09. Do not take gold, silver, or copper in your money belts.
Mt.10:10. Do not bring a leather bag for the road. Do not bring two shirts. Also, do not take sandals or a walking stick. The worker is worthy of his food.
Mt.10:11. And when you enter into a city or village, find out who is a worthy person. Stay in his house until you leave the that place.
Mt.10:12. When you enter into that house, greet it.
Mt.10:13. If the house is worthy, give it your peace. But if it is not worthy, take your peace away from it.
Mt.10:14. And if anyone does not welcome your or listen to your words, go outside of that house or city. Then shake off the dust of your feet.
Mt.10:15. Truly, I say to you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.
COMMENT: The King James Bible says that Sodom and Gomorrah are "suffering the vengeance of eternal fire" in Jude 7. If this is true, then Matthew 10:15 is meaningless. If they are suffering "eternal" vengeance now, it is pointless to talk about a future judgment! However, this apparent contradiction is due to a mistranslation and misunderstanding of the word aiōnios. Sodom and Gomorrah will be punished, but they will also be restored (Ezekiel 16:53-55). They are not suffering "eternal" fire. A more detailed explanation of the word aiōnios will be given in Matthew 18:8.
Mt.10:16. I am sending you as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise like serpents, but pure like doves.
Mt.10:17. Be careful of people. They will deliver you over to Sanhedrins, and they will whip you in their synagogues.
Mt.10:18. And you will be brought before governors and kings on account of me. You will give a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
COMMENT: This had a future application, unless there are details omitted from the gospel accounts. This was fulfilled during the Acts of the Apostles. However, there will probably be another future fulfillment also. This will happen when Israel's administration is restarted. The apostles will be raised from the dead in order to complete their ministry. Then all these things will happen to them. Jesus spoke many prophecies concerning them that have not been fulfilled yet. They will be fulfilled in the future.
Mt.10:19. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how you should speak or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak.
Mt.10:20. It will not be you speaking, but the spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
Mt.10:21. But brother will kill brother. And father will kill child. And children will rise up against their parents, and they will kill them.
Mt.10:22. And everyone will hate you on account of my name. But the person who endures until the consummation will be saved.
Mt.10:23. But when they may persecute you in this city, flee to another city. I truly say to you that you will never finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man should come.
COMMENT: It is not clear if this was fulfilled or not yet. It might have been fulfilled in the past. Or it might be fulfilled in the future. There is no record of it being fulfilled in the four gospels. It may have been fulfilled during the Acts of the Apostles period. However, this will probably be fulfilled in the future after the apostles are raised from the dead. With regard to the Son of Man coming again, there are a few important verses. When Jesus comes back for Israel, he will stand again on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4). Hebrews 9:28 indicates the "second coming." This is an event in reference to the Jewish administration.There is still much prophecy that needs to be fulfilled before this event can take place. In this regard, it is important to recognize that the scripture teaches that there are multiple future appearings of the Lord Jesus. Paul says this explicitly in 1 Timothy 6:14-15! These appearings are different from the "second coming" of Hebrews 9:28. They belong to a different administration. In addition to future appearings, there was also a significant past appearing. This happened after Jesus was raised from the dead. Paul tells us about this in Ephesians 2:16-17. He may also hint to it in 1 Timothy 3:16. We know that before the cross Jesus came exclusively to Jews (Matthew 10:5-6, 15:24, Romans 15:8). But in Ephesians 2:17, Paul says Jesus came and proclaimed peace to Gentiles. This was after his resurrection (Ephesians 2:16). This topic of multiple appearings will be described in greater detail later, but for now it is important to recognize it.
Mt.10:24. The disciple is not greater than the teacher, and a slave is not greater than his lord.
Mt.10:25. It is sufficient for the disciple to be like his teacher. It is sufficient for the slave to be like his lord. If people have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much rather those of his household?
Mt.10:26. Therefore do not be afraid of them. Everything covered will be revealed, and everything hidden will become known.
Mt.10:27. What I speak to you in the dark, speak in the light. And what you hear in the ear, proclaim on the housetops.
Mt.10:28. And do not fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul. But, rather, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in the Valley of Hinnom.
COMMENT: The spirit and the soul are not the same things. The soul refers to the sensations and desires of the body. For the Israelites, they had a desire toward the kingdom. The righteous ones might have their bodies killed, but the desire of their souls will be fulfilled in the coming kingdom. The wicked ones, however, might have their bodies and souls destroyed at the coming of the kingdom. In other words, they will be thrown into the Valley of Hinnom and will be killed, and the desire of their souls toward the kingdom will be destroyed.
Mt.10:29. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And one of them will not fall to the earth against your Father's will.
Mt.10:30. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.
Mt.10:31. Therefore do not fear. You are more important than many sparrows.
Mt.10:32. Therefore I will acknowledge before my Father who is in the heavens everyone who acknowledges me before people.
Mt.10:33. But I will deny before my Father who is in the heavens everyone who denies me before people.
Mt.10:34. Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace. I came to bring a sword.
Mt.10:35. For I came to create discord between a man and his father, and to create discord between a daughter and her mother, and to create discord between a daughter-in-law and her mother-in-law.
Mt.10:36. And a man's enemies will become the people of his household.
Mt.10:37. Anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. And anyone who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Mt.10:38. And whoever does not bear his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
Mt.10:39. The one who finds his soul will destroy it, and the one who destroys his soul on account of me will find it.
Mt.10:40. The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who dispatched me.
Mt.10:41. The one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward. And the one who receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.
Mt.10:42. And the one who gives a mere refreshing drink to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will never lose his reward."
Mt.11:01. When Jesus finished commanding his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and to proclaim in their cities.
Mt.11:02. But John heard about the works of Christ from prison. Therefore, he sent his disciples, and
Mt.11:03. he asked him, "Are you the one who is coming, or should we await for a different one?"
Mt.11:04. Jesus answered and said to them, "Go, report to John the things you hear and see.
Mt.11:05. Blind people receive sight, and lame people walk. Lepers are cleansed, and deaf people hear. Dead people are raised from the dead, and the good news is proclaimed to poor people.
Mt.11:06. And blessed is the one who does not stumble because of me.
Mt.11:07. When they left, Jesus began to talk to the crowds about John. He said, "What did you go out to the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
Mt.11:08. What did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Behold, people who wear soft clothes are in the houses of kings.
Mt.11:09. But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, and I say to you that he was more than a prophet.
Mt.11:10. This is the one concerning whom it is written, 'Behold, I dispatch my messenger before your face. He will prepare your way before you.'
Mt.11:11. Truly, I say to you that among those born of women there has not arisen one greater than John the Baptist. But the one who is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.
Mt.11:12. But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of the heavens has suffered violence, and the violent ones seize it.
Mt.11:13. For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Mt.11:14. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah. He is the one who is going to come.
Mt.11:15. The one who has ears, let him hear!
Mt.11:16. But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets. They call out to others and
Mt.11:17. say, 'We played the flute for you, but you did not dance. We lamented, but you did not mourn.'
Mt.11:18. For John came neither eating nor drinking, but they say, 'He has a demon.'
Mt.11:19. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a wine drinker. Behold, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom will be proven righteous by her works."
Mt.11:20. Then he began to reproach the cities in which he did his most powerful works, because they did not have a change-of-mind.
Mt.11:21. "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the powerful works which were done in you were done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have had a change-of-mind long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
Mt.11:22. Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
Mt.11:23. And you, Capernaum will not be exalted to heaven! Rather, you will be brought down to the realm of the grave. For if the powerful works which were done in you were done in Sodom, it would have remained until today.
COMMENT: The "realm of the grave" (hadēs) does not mean "hell" as traditionally translated. The "realm of the grave" is the place where the dead are. They are not living. They are literally dead. Death is not a state of life in another form. Death really means death. If this were not true, it would be pointless to speak of death and life. Solomon says that the dead know nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5). The dead have no consciousness. Hades is equivalent to the Hebrew word Sheol.
Mt.11:24. Nevertheless I say to you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you."
Mt.11:25. During that period of time, Jesus answered and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, but revealed them to babies.
Mt.11:26. Yes, Father, because in this way it was pleasing before you.
Mt.11:27. All things are delivered over to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father. And no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son wants to reveal him.
Mt.11:28. Come to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.
Mt.11:29. Take up my yoke upon you and learn from me. For I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Mt.11:30. For my yoke is kind and my burden is light."
Mt.12:01. During that period of time, Jesus went through the grain fields on the sabbaths. But his disciples were hungry, so they began to pluck off the ears and eat them.
Mt.12:02. But the Pharisees saw this and said to him, "Behold, what your disciples are doing. They are doing what is not allowed on a sabbath."
Mt.12:03. But he said to them, "Have you never read what David and those with him did when they were hungry:
Mt.12:04. He entered into the house of God, and they ate the bread of presentation. This was not authorized for him or those with him to eat, except the priests only.
Mt.12:05. Or have you never read in law what the priests in the temple do on the sabbath? They violate the sabbath, yet are regarded as guiltless.
Mt.12:06. But I say to you that one greater than the temple is here.
Mt.12:07. But if you had understood what this means, 'I want mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.
Mt.12:08. For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.
Mt.12:09. After he departed from there, he came into their synagogue.
Mt.12:10. And behold, there was a man there who had a withered hand. Therefore, they asked him, "Is it authorized to heal on the sabbaths?" They asked this because they wanted to accuse him.
Mt.12:11. But he said to them, "Who among you will have one sheep, and if it should fall into a pit on the sabbaths, will not take hold of it and raise it?
Mt.12:12. Therefore, a man is much more important than a sheep, isn't he? Therefore, it is authorized to do good on the sabbaths."
Mt.12:13. Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out and it was restored just as sound as the other.
Mt.12:14. But when he went out, the Pharisees discussed how they might destroy him.
Mt.12:15. But Jesus knew about this and departed from there. And many people followed him, and he healed them all.
Mt.12:16. And he warned them that they should not make him known to others.
COMMENT: This is very important. Jesus is about to explain why he wanted to keep his identity a secret (Matthew 12:17-19).
Mt.12:17. This was in order to fulfill the word spoken through Isaiah the prophet.
Mt.12:18. "Behold, my servant whom I have chosen. He is my beloved and my soul is well pleased with him. I will put my spirit on him, and he will proclaim judgment to the nations.
COMMENT: God always had a plan for the Gentiles (i.e., nations). However, their salvation was to be accomplished through Israel. The Gentiles will be guided into the light by Israel directly. This is quite different from our current administration, which was introduced through the Apostle Paul.
Mt.12:19. He will not quarrel, and he will not cry out, and no one will hear his voice in the streets.
COMMENT: This is one reason why he did not want to reveal his identity. This was foreshadowing the kingdom age when he will reign from heaven. Israel's kingdom will be established on earth, but it will be reigned over by the Lord from heaven. The Lord's throne is in the heaven, while the earth is his footstool (Psalm 11:4, Psalm 103:9, Matthew 5:34-35). Paul says that Jesus must reign until all enemies are put under his feet (1 Corinthians 15:25). He will reign from heaven. After this, he will physically reign on earth for one thousand years (Revelation 20). In this context, Jesus as king reigns and shows judgment to the Gentiles. However, his voice will not be heard in the street. Is it possible for a king to reign silently without his voice being heard in the streets? Jesus during his lifetime was surely heard on the streets. He quarreled with the Jews on more than one occasion, and he shouted out in the synagogue. What are these verses referring to? They are referring to his heavenly reign. During that time, people will be enlightened with his knowledge from heaven. This is when verses like Isaiah 30:21 will be fulfilled. "And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." This is still future. This will happen when the kingdom will be restored to Israel (Acts 1:6-7). We are presently living in a different administration. Gentiles currently have access to the word of God freely without the guidance of Israel. This present administration was introduced and taught in Paul's latter epistles (Ephesians to Philemon).
Mt.12:20. He will not break a crushed reed, and he will not extinguish a smoldering wick, until he should send out judgment to victory.
Mt.12:21. And the nations will put their expectation on his name."
COMMENT: The kingdom will be restored to Israel, and all of the Gentile nations will be subject to it. They will see his glory and put their expectation in him.
Mt.12:22. Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to him. And he healed him so that the mute man spoke and saw.
Mt.12:23. And all the crowds were amazed and said, "Is not this the Son of David?"
Mt.12:24. But the Pharisees heard this and said, "This one does not cast out demons except by Beelzebul the ruler of demons."
Mt.12:25. But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is made desolate. And every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
Mt.12:26. And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. Therefore, how will his kingdom stand?
Mt.12:27. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges.
Mt.12:28. But if I cast out demons by the spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Mt.12:29. Or how can anyone enter into the house of the strong one and plunder his property, unless he should first bind the strong one? And then he will thoroughly plunder his house.
Mt.12:30. The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters.
Mt.12:31. Therefore, I say to you that every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people. But blasphemy against the spirit will not be forgiven.
Mt.12:32. If anyone should say a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him, but if anyone says anything against the holy spirit, it will not be forgiven him, neither in this eon nor in the coming eon.
COMMENT: God has created multiple eons. He uses these eons to fulfill his plan (Hebrews 1:2). His plan for the eons also has a consummation (i.e., end) (1 Corinthians 10:11, Hebrews 9:26). The consummation of the current plan will occur when everyone is vivified (made alive physically and spiritually) and God becomes all in all (1 Corinthians 15:22-28). People who speak against the holy spirit will miss out on eon-defined life. They will be subject to the judgment and wrath of God. As we will see later, this judgment is remedial. The offending parties will be vivified at the consummation. (1 Corinthians 15:22-28). There are many passages that teach this final universal reconciliation of God's creation. We will talk about them later. Also, information on the meaning of "eon-defined life" will be given later.
Mt.12:33. Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree rotten and its fruit rotten. For the tree is known out of its fruit.
Mt.12:34. You offspring of vipers! Since you are wicked, how can you speak good things? For the mouth speaks out of the abundance of the heart.
Mt.12:35. The good man brings out good things out of his good treasures, but the wicked man brings out wicked things out of his wicked treasure.
Mt.12:36. But I tell you this: people will give an account in the day of judgment for every idle word they have spoken.
COMMENT: With regard to the current administration, Paul teaches that people are saved by faith, and not by works. This teaching must be held onto firmly. Many pay lip service to this teaching, but in actuality, it is rarely taught these days. At the same time, however, we must also remember that there is a judgment of believers (Colossians 3:23-25). In other words, sin has consequences: many people are disciplined during this life, while there are others who will lose their reward in the next eon.
Mt.12:37. For by your words you will be proven righteous, and by your words you will be condemned."
Mt.12:38. Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him and said, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you."
Mt.12:39. But he answered and said to them, "A wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet.
Mt.12:40. For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish three days and three nights, thus the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three night.
Mt.12:41. The men of Nineveh will rise up against and condemn this generation in the judgment, because they had a change-of-mind at the proclamation of Jonah. But, behold, a greater than Jonah is here.
Mt.12:42. The queen of the south will rise up against and condemn this generation in the judgment, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. But, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
Mt.12:43. When the unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but does not find it.
Mt.12:44. Then it says, 'I will go back to my house from which I came out.' And when it comes, it finds the house unoccupied, swept, and decorated.
Mt.12:45. Then it goes and takes with itself seven different spirits, which are more wicked than itself. Then it enters and dwells there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Thus it will be for this wicked generation also."
COMMENT: Verses 43-45 most likely refer to the spiritual condition of Israel. When the kingdom is restored to Israel, it is like an unclean spirit coming out of a man. The house of Israel is then unoccupied (of evil), swept, and decorated. However, after hundreds of years of prosperity, spiritual conditions begin to deteriorate. This will culminate in the coming of Anti-christ. This is like the unclean spirit returning with seven other wicked spirits. "This generation" may refer to the race of Jews, or it may literally refer to the Jews of Jesus' day. Most of them will have been raised from the dead during the kingdom period, so they will be eyewitnesses of these things. This accords with Revelation 1:7.
Mt.12:46. But while he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and brothers stood outside and they wanted to speak to him.
Mt.12:47. But someone said to him, "Behold, your mother and your brothers stand outside, and they want to speak to you."
Mt.12:48. But he answered and said to the one who spoke to, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
Mt.12:49. Then, he stretched out his hand over his disciples and said, "Behold, my mother and my brothers.
Mt.12:50. For whoever does the will of my Father who is in the heavens, this one is my brother and sister and mother."
Mt.13:01. In that day, Jesus came out of the house and sat beside the sea.
Mt.13:02. Then he got into a boat because many crowds gathered to him. And the whole crowd was standing on the beach.
Mt.13:03. And he spoke many things to them in parables. He said, "Behold, a sower went out to sow.
Mt.13:04. And when he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road. Then the birds came and devoured it.
Mt.13:05. But other seeds fell on rocky places, where it did not have much earth. Therefore, it immediately sprang up because it did not have any depth of earth.
Mt.13:06. When the sun rose, it was scorched, and then it withered because it had no root.
Mt.13:07. But other seed fell on thorns, and the thorns came up and choked it.
Mt.13:08. But other seed fell on good earth and produced fruit. Some a hundred-fold, some sixty-fold, and some thirty-fold.
Mt.13:09. The one who has ears, let him hear!"
Mt.13:10. Then his disciples approached him and said, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"
Mt.13:11. But he answered and said to them, "Because you have been granted to know the secrets of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them, this has not been granted.
COMMENT: Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables only (see verse 34). This is consistent with his desire to hide his identity. However, he spoke openly to his disciples in private. They were granted to know the secrets of the kingdom of the heavens, but other people could not understand them. Therefore, we should approach the parables of Jesus very humbly because these parables are very easily misunderstood. Furthermore, it should be mentioned again that these parables concern Israel. As for us, they can still be spiritually applied during our current administration. We just need to avoid the temptation of thinking that we (people of this administration) have become Israel or spiritual Israel. The promises to Israel have not been transferred to anyone. They will be fulfilled in their due seasons.
Mt.13:12. For more will be given to the one who has, and he will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even that which he has will be taken away from him.
Mt.13:13. Therefore, I speak to them in parables so that seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Mt.13:14. And the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in them, which says, 'By hearing, you will hear and by no means may be understanding. and by seeing, you will see and by no means may be perceiving.
Mt.13:15. For the heart of this people is fattened, and with their ears they hardly hear, and their eyes they have closed. Otherwise, they would perceive with their eyes, and they would hear with their ears, and they would understand with their heart, and they would turn around, and I would heal them.'
COMMENT: Paul repeated this prophecy in Acts 28. Even at this early point in Jesus' ministry, Jesus speaks of his rejection by the Jews. This paves the way for the salvation of God to go to the Gentiles as a means of making Israel jealous (Romans 11). This is basically the meaning of the latter half of the Acts of the Apostles. This period of "making Israel jealous" occupied Paul's earlier epistles (Romans to Galatians).
Mt.13:16. But blessed are your eyes because they see, and blessed are your ears because they hear.
Mt.13:17. For, truly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous people wanted to see the things that you see, but they did not see them, and they wanted to hear the things that you hear, but they did not hear them.
Mt.13:18. Therefore, hear the parable of the sower:
Mt.13:19. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, but does not understand it, the wicked one comes and snatches away the word that was sown in his heart. This is the one that was sown beside the road.
Mt.13:20. But the one that was sown on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.
Mt.13:21. But he does not have root in himself, and only abides for a season. But when affliction or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
Mt.13:22. But the one that was sown into the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the worries of this eon and the deception of riches choke the word and it becomes unfruitful.
Mt.13:23. But the one that is sown on the good earth, this is the one who hears the word and understands. This one bears fruit, and some produce a hundred-fold, some sixty-fold, and some thirty-fold."
COMMENT: Therefore, one interpretation would be this: The ones sown beside the road are lost. They are not saved in this eon. The ones sown on rocky places and the ones sown in the thorns produce no fruit. They are saved, but they will receive no reward. The ones sown on good earth bear fruit. They are saved, and they will receive a reward. This seems a little bit more reasonable than simply declaring that the first three groups (road side, rocky places, and thorns) are all lost. However, at the same time, it doesn't seem possible to make a blanket statement about the two groups that produce no fruit. Some of them may be saved, and some of them may be lost. God knows the heart, so he will judge concerning such as these.
Mt.13:24. He spoke another parable to them and said, "The kingdom of the heavens is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.
Mt.13:25. But while the people slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the grain, and then went away.
Mt.13:26. But when the grass sprouted and produced fruit, then appeared also the tares.
Mt.13:27. But the slaves of the master of the house approached him and said, 'Lord, did you not sow good seed in your field? Therefore, why does it have tares?'
Mt.13:28. But he said to them, 'An enemy, who is a man, did this.' But the slaves said to him, 'Therefore, do you want us to go and gather them?'
Mt.13:29. But he said, 'No. Otherwise, when you gather the tares, you will uproot the grain together with it.
Mt.13:30. Let both grow together until the harvest. Then, in the season of the harvest, I will say to the reapers, Gather first the tares and bind them into bundles to burn them. But gather the grain into my storehouse.'"
Mt.13:31. He said another parable to them, "The kingdom of the heavens is like a kernel of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field.
Mt.13:32. This kernel is smaller than all other seeds, but whenever it grows up, it becomes greater than the vegetables and it becomes a tree so that the birds of heaven come and dwell in its branches."
Mt.13:33. He said another parable to them, "The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened."
Mt.13:34. All these things Jesus spoke in parables to the crowds, and without a parable he spoke nothing to them.
Mt.13:35. This was in order to fulfill the word spoken through Isaiah the prophet. "I will open my mouth in parables, and proclaim what has been hidden from the foundation."
COMMENT: Some manuscripts say "foundation of the world."
Mt.13:36. Then he left the crowds and he went into the house. Then, his disciples approached him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field."
COMMENT: This parable explains much about the coming kingdom.
Mt.13:37. But he answered and said, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man.
Mt.13:38. But the field is the world and the good seed are the sons of the kingdom. But the tares are the sons of the wicked one.
COMMENT: The Son of Man establishes his kingdom in the world with good seed, which are the sons of the kingdom.
Mt.13:39. But the enemy who sows them is the Slanderer. The harvest is the conclusion of the eon. The reapers are the angels.
COMMENT: Although only good seed existed at the start, the Slanderer sows in sons of the wicked one. The conclusion of the eon will be the transition from the premillenial kingdom period (when the kingdom is restored to Israel and Christ reigns from the heavens) to the millenial kingdom period (when Christ reigns personally on earth). Also, "eon" is singular. This is the conclusion of the "eon," not "eons." God's plan spans multiple eons.
Mt.13:40. Therefore, just as the tares are gathered and burned with fire, thus will it be in the conclusion of the eon. (***TRANSLATION USE: Therefore, the conclusion of the eon will be just like the tares being gathered and burned with fire.)
Mt.13:41. The Son of Man will dispatch his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all the offenses and those who do lawlessness,
COMMENT: It is important to notice that the Son of Man has already established his kingdom prior to all of this happening. This kingdom refers to the premillenial kingdom, which was sown with good seed. Only good seed existed in the beginning, but afterward tares were sown. The premillenial kingdom will be the same. It shall prosper, but after a longer period of time, morality will deteriorate.
Mt.13:42. and they will throw them into a furnace of fire. There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth.
Mt.13:43. Then the righteous ones will shine out as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears, let him hear!
Mt.13:44. The kingdom of the heavens is like a treasure hidden in a field. After a man finds it, he hides it, and in his joy, he goes and sells all he has in order to buy the field.
Mt.13:45. Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a merchant man who sought good pearls.
Mt.13:46. But when he found one very valuable pearl, he went away and sold everything he had, and then bought it.
Mt.13:47. Again the kingdom of the heavens is like a dragnet cast into the sea, which gathered some of every kind.
Mt.13:48. And when it was filled, people pulled it to the beach. Then they sat down and gathered the good ones into containers, but they discarded the bad ones.
Mt.13:49. Thus it will be at the conclusion of the eon. The angels will come out, and they will separate the wicked ones out of the midst of the righteous ones.
Mt.13:50. And they will cast them into a furnace of fire. There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth.
Mt.13:51. Do you understand all of these things?" They said to him, "Yes."
Mt.13:52. But he said to them, "Therefore, every scribe who has been made a disciple in the kingdom of the heavens is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure new things and old things."
Mt.13:53. When Jesus finished these parables, then he went away from there.
Mt.13:54. And when he came to his hometown, he taught them in their synagogue. The people were astonished and said, "From where did this one get this wisdom and powerful works?
Mt.13:55. Is not this the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary? Are not his brothers Jacob and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
Mt.13:56. And are not his sisters all with us? Therefore, from where did this one get all of these things?"
Mt.13:57. And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown and in his own household."
Mt.13:58. And he did not do many powerful works there because of their unbelief.
Mt.14:01. During that season Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,
Mt.14:02. and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead. Therefore, these powerful works are done in him."
Mt.14:03. For Herod seized John and bound him and put him in prison. He did this because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.
Mt.14:04. For John said to him, "You are not allowed to have her."
Mt.14:05. And he wanted to kill him, but he feared the people, because they regarded him as a prophet.
Mt.14:06. But when it was Herod's birthday celebration, the daughter of Herodias danced during the celebration, and she pleased Herod.
Mt.14:07. Therefore, he promised with an oath to give her whatever she wanted.
Mt.14:08. But she was told beforehand by her mother, and therefore, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter."
Mt.14:09. And although the king was grieved, because of the oaths and those sat with him at the meal, he ordered it to be given.
Mt.14:10. Then he sent a servant and he beheaded John in the prison.
Mt.14:11. And his head was brought on a platter and it given to the young girl, and she brought it to her mother.
Mt.14:12. Then his disciples approached and took away the corpse and buried it. After this, they went and reported this to Jesus.
Mt.14:13. But when Jesus heard this, he departed from there by boat to a wilderness place by himself. And when the crowds heard about this, they followed him on foot from the cities.
Mt.14:14. Then he came out and saw many crowds, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick ones.
Mt.14:15. But when evening came, the disciples approached him and said, "The place is a wilderness and it has already become late. Send away the crowds so that they can go away into the villages and buy food for themselves."
Mt.14:16. But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
Mt.14:17. But they said to him, "We do not have anything here except for five loaves of bread and two fish."
Mt.14:18. He said, "Bring them here to me."
Mt.14:19. Then he commanded the crowds to recline on the grass, and he took the five loaves of bread and the two fish, and he looked up into the heaven, and he blessed them. Then he broke them and gave the loaves of bread to the disciples. And the disciples distributed them to the crowds.
Mt.14:20. And they all ate and were filled. And they picked up the remaining broken pieces, which amounted to twelve baskets full.
Mt.14:21. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Mt.14:22. And immediately he compelled (TRANSLATION USE: forced) his disciples to get into a boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent away the crowds.
Mt.14:23. And after he sent them away, he ascended into the mountain by himself to prayer. And with evening coming, he was there alone.
Mt.14:24. But the boat was already many stadia of distance from the land, and they were undergoing a painful trial due to the waves because the wind was contrary to them.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 4:24.
Mt.14:25. Between three and six o'clock in the morning, he came to them by walking on the sea.
Mt.14:26. But the disciples were troubled when they saw him walking on the water. They said, "It is a phantom!" And they cried out from fear.
Mt.14:27. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Have courage! It is I. Do not fear."
Mt.14:28. But Peter answered and said to him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water."
Mt.14:29. Then he said, "Come!" And getting out the boat, Peter walked on the water and came to Jesus.
Mt.14:30. But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid. And when he began to sink, he cried out and said, "Lord, save me!"
COMMENT: When we see the word "save" or "salvation" in the scriptures, we should not immediately assume it refers to spiritual salvation. In this verse, it is clear that Peter is speaking of his physical salvation. This word can have various meanings depending on the context.
Mt.14:31. But immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and grabbed him and said to him, "You of little faith! Why did you hesitate?"
Mt.14:32. And when they got into the boat, the wind stopped.
Mt.14:33. Then those in the boat worshiped him and said, "Truly you are the Son of God."
Mt.14:34. And they crossed over from there and came to the land of Gennesaret.
Mt.14:35. And since the men of that place recognized him, they dispatched people into that whole surrounding region, and they brought to him all those who had illness.
Mt.14:36. And they begged him that they might only touch the edge of his garment. And whoever touched it was saved.
Mt.15:01. Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem, and they approached Jesus and said,
Mt.15:02. "Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they may eat bread."
Mt.15:03. But he answered and said to them, "Why do you transgress the commandment of God on account of your tradition?
Mt.15:04. For God said, 'Honor father and mother,' and 'The one who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.'
Mt.15:05. But you say, 'Whoever says to father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me, it has become an offering,"
Mt.15:06. does not need to honor his father.' And you make void the word of God through your tradition.
Mt.15:07. Hypocrites! Isaiah rightly prophesied concerning you when he said,
Mt.15:08. This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is a far distance from me.
Mt.15:09. But in vain they revere me, teaching as teachings the commandments of men.'"
COMMENT: Sadly, there are also many commandments of men in Christian churches today. These traditions and commandments of men include eternal punishment (hell), fake science, works-based salvation, and tithing. There are many more also. Paul prophesied this in 2 Timothy 4:3-4. This rebellion was occurring while Paul was still living (2 Timothy 1:15). Therefore, we should not think for a second that our generation is somehow immune to this prophesy. Far from it, our generation is worse off in many respects both morally and doctrinally.
Mt.15:10. Then he called the crowd and said to them, "Hear and understand this.
Mt.15:11. Nothing that goes into the mouth can defile a man. That which goes out of the mouth, this defiles a man."
Mt.15:12. Then the disciples approached him and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they hear your words?"
Mt.15:13. But he answered and said, "Every plant that is not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted.
Mt.15:14. Leave them. They are blind guides of the blind. But if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."
Mt.15:15. But Peter answered and said to him, "Explain to us this parable."
Mt.15:16. But he said, "Are you also still without understanding?
Mt.15:17. Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth goes on to the stomach and then is expelled as waste into the sewer?
Mt.15:18. But the things going out of the mouth come out of the heart, and these things defile the person.
Mt.15:19. For out of the heart comes out wicked reasonings, murders, adulteries, prostitutions, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.
Mt.15:20. These things are the things that defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a person."
Mt.15:21. And after he departed from there, Jesus went to the regions of Tyre and Sidon.
Mt.15:22. At that time, a Canaanite woman came out from that region. She cried out and said, "Be merciful to me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is badly possessed by a demon!"
Mt.15:23. But he did not answer her at all. And then his disciples approached him. They asked him and said, "Send her away, because she cries out after us."
Mt.15:24. But he answered and said, "I was not dispatched except for the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
COMMENT: This is an important verse that tells us about Jesus' ministry. He was not sent to Gentiles. That should be obvious. However, he was not even sent to all of Israel, but only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. He came to gather his small flock, who will be appointed rulers in the coming kingdom (Luke 12:32, Matthew 21:43-45).
Mt.15:25. But she came and worshiped him, and she said, "Lord, help me!"
Mt.15:26. But he answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and cast it to the puppies."
COMMENT: Basically, Jesus regarded Gentiles as puppies (small dogs).
Mt.15:27. But she said, "Yes, Lord, for even the puppies eat from the crumbs of the things that fall from the tables of their lords."
Mt.15:28. Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith. Let it happen to you as you want." And her daughter was healed from that hour.
Mt.15:29. After this, Jesus continued on and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he ascended into the mountain and sat there.
Mt.15:30. And many crowds approached him. They brought with them mute people, blind people, blind people, lame people, crippled people, and many others. And they placed them down at his feet, and he healed them.
Mt.15:31. Then the crowd marveled when they saw the mute people speaking, the crippled people healthy, the lame people walking, and the blind people seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.
Mt.15:32. But Jesus called his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me for three days already and do not have anything to eat. And I am not willing to send them away fasting. Otherwise, they might become weary on the road."
Mt.15:33. And the disciples said to him, "From where in this wilderness can we find enough bread to satisfy such a large crowd?"
Mt.15:34. And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves of bread do you have?" But they said, "Seven, and a few small fish."
Mt.15:35. And he commanded to the crowd to sit on the ground,
Mt.15:36. and then he took the seven loaves of bread and the fish, and he gave thanks and broke them and gave them to the disciples. And the disciples distributed them to the crowds.
Mt.15:37. And they all ate and were filled. And they picked up the remaining broken pieces, which amounted to seven large baskets full.
Mt.15:38. And those who ate were about four thousand men, besides women and children.
Mt.15:39. After this, he dismissed the crowds and got into ship, and he came int the region of Magadan.
Mt.16:01. And the Pharisees and Sadducess approached him in order to tempt him. The asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
Mt.16:02. But he answered and said to them, "When evening comes, you say, 'The weather will be fine, for the heaven is red,'
Mt.16:03. And in the morning, 'Today will be a storm, for the heaven is red and darkening.' You know how to discern the face of the heaven, but you are not able to discern the signs of the seasons.
Mt.16:04. A wicked and adulteress generation seeks for a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." And he left them and departed.
Mt.16:05. And when the disciples went to the other side, they forgot to bring bread.
Mt.16:06. But Jesus said to them, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"
Mt.16:07. But they reasoned among themselves and said, "It is because we did not bring bread."
Mt.16:08. But when Jesus knew it, he said, "Why are you reasoning among yourselves, you of little faith, because you did not bring bread?
Mt.16:09. Do you not yet understand? Do you not remember the five loaves of bread of the five thousand people? Do you not remember how many baskets you picked up?
Mt.16:10. Do you not remember the seven loaves of the four thousand people? Do you not remember how many large baskets you picked up?
Mt.16:11. How do you not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Mt.16:12. Then they understood that he was not talking about the leaven of bread. But he was saying to beware of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Mt.16:13. Then Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi. And he asked his disciples and said, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
Mt.16:14. They said, "Some say John the Baptist, yet others say Elijah, yet others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
Mt.16:15. He said to them, "But you, who do you say that I am?"
Mt.16:16. But Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Mt.16:17. But Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you. My Father who is in the heavens revealed it to you.
Mt.16:18. But I also say to you that you are Peter. And on this rock I will build my called-out community. And the gates of the realm of the grave will not prevail against it.
COMMENT: "Called-out community" is a more descriptive and accurate translation than "church."
Mt.16:19. I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens. Whatever you bind on the earth will be bound in the heavens, and whatever you loose on the earth will be loosed in the heavens.
COMMENT: The plural form of "key" is used here. One was for opening the door of the kingdom to the Jews. This was fulfilled in Acts 2. The other was for opening the door to the Gentiles. This was fulfilled in Acts 10.
Mt.16:20. Then he commanded his disciples that they should tell no one that he is the Christ.
Mt.16:21. After this, Jesus began to show his disciples that it is necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and to suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and be raised on the third day.
Mt.16:22. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, and he said, "Mercy be to you, Lord. By no means will this be to you."
Mt.16:23. But he turned around and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan. You are an offense to me, because you do not set your mind on the things of God, but the things of people."
Mt.16:24. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and pick up his cross and follow me.
Mt.16:25. For whoever wants to save his soul will destroy it, but whoever destroys his soul on account of me will find it.
Mt.16:26. For what will a person be benefited if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?
Mt.16:27. For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will pay to each according to his deeds.
Mt.16:28. Truly, I say to you that there are some among the people standing here who will not die until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
COMMENT: Many Bible interpreters think this prophecy was immediately fulfilled in Matthew 17:1-9. However, if this is true, it would not be such a spectacular prophecy, since not only some, but most (and probably all) of those who heard this prophecy would still be alive. Therefore, there must be a lengthy period between the utterance and fulfillment. This prophecy was probably fulfilled during the Acts of the Apostles period. During that period the disciples had a foretaste of kingdom conditions. Otherwise, it might refer to the event that Paul speaks of in Ephesians 2:16-17. Peter does make reference to the transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9) in 2 Peter 1:16-18. But for the reasons previous stated with regard to the timing, this transfiguration probably is not a fulfillment of this prophecy.
Mt.17:01. And after six days Jesus took along Peter and Jacob and John his brother. And he brought them into a high mountain by themselves.
Mt.17:02. And he was transfigured in front of them, and his face shined as the sun, and his clothes became bright as the light.
Mt.17:03. And they saw Moses and Elijah talking with him.
COMMENT: If the dead are really dead, how can Moses and Elijah be here? We have the mystery of Moses' body in Jude 9, and we know that Elijah was taken up into heaven before dying. Therefore, this can explain their presence here.
Mt.17:04. But Peter answered and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you are willing, I will make here three tabernacles: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
Mt.17:05. But while he is yet speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. And a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear him!"
Mt.17:06. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid.
Mt.17:07. And Jesus approached them and touched them, and he said, "Get up and do not be afraid."
Mt.17:08. But when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.
Mt.17:09. And when they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead."
Mt.17:10. And his disciples asked him "Why, therefore, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"
Mt.17:11. But Jesus answered, "Elijah indeed is coming, and he will restore all things."
COMMENT: Jesus speaks of a future restoration here. In the next verse, Jesus says that John the Baptist was Elijah (according to the interpretation in verse 13). But since this restoration is still future, and John had already died, it is clear that it clear that John did not fulfill this prophecy. Elijah will literally come back, not only in spirit, but in his physical body.
Mt.17:12. But I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not know him. But they did to him whatever they wanted. Thus, the Son of Man is also going to suffer by them."
Mt.17:13. Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them concerning John the Baptist.
Mt.17:14. And, when they came to the crowd, a man approached him and fell on his knees before him.
Mt.17:15. He said, "Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers badly, for often he falls into the fire and often into the water.
Mt.17:16. And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to heal him."
Mt.17:17. But he answered, "O unbelieving and perverted generation, until when will I be with you? Until when will I bear with you? Bring him here to me."
COMMENT: Jesus was annoyed by their unbelief. This included the boy's father and his disciples.
Mt.17:18. And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out from him. And the boy was healed from that hour.
Mt.17:19. Then the disciples approached Jesus by themselves and said, "Why were we not able to cast it out?"
Mt.17:20. But he said to them, "Because of your little faith. For, truly, I say to you, if you had faith as a kernel of mustard, you would say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it would move. And nothing would be impossible for you."
Mt.17:21. ["But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."]
Mt.17:22. But when they gathered in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered over into the hands of men,
Mt.17:23. and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised." And they were exceedingly grieved.
Mt.17:24. But when they came into Capernaum, those who collected the temple tax approached Peter and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
Mt.17:25. He said, "Yes." And when he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, "What do you think, Simon? The kings of the earth, from whom do they receive tribute or poll tax? From their sons or from strangers?"
Mt.17:26. But he said, "From strangers." Then Jesus said to him, "Consequently, the sons are free.
Mt.17:27. But, in order not to offend them, go to the sea and cast a fish hook and pick up the first fish that comes up. Then open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you."
Mt.18:01. In that hour the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?"
Mt.18:02. And he called a child to himself, and he stood him in the midst of them.
Mt.18:03. And he said, "Truly, I say to you that unless you change and become as children, you will never enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Mt.18:04. Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this child, this is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens.
Mt.18:05. And whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.
Mt.18:06. But if anyone offends one of the least of these ones who believe in me, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung on his neck and he drowned in the depths of the sea.
Mt.18:07. Woe to the world because of offenses. It is a necessity for offenses to come, but woe to the man through whom the offense comes.
Mt.18:08. But if your hand or your foot offends you, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into eon-defined fire.
COMMENT: Aiōnios is often translated as "eternal." However, this is a mistranslation. As one example, compare Jude 7 with Ezekiel 16:53-55. Since Ezekiel prophesied that Sodom would be restored, their punishment cannot be eternal. The literal meaning of aiōnios is "concerning the eon" or "pertaining to the eon." It describes a quality, and not necessarily a length of time. Therefore, we have chosen the translation of "eon-defined." "Defined" is not meant to imply that the eon prescribes rules on the noun it modifies. It simply means that the noun is characterized by the characteristics of the eon. God prescribes the conditions (characteristics) of the eon, and these conditions characterize the fire, life, or chastisement (Matthew 25:46).
Mt.18:09. And if your eye offends you, tear it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life one-eyed than to have two eyes and be cast into the Valley of Hinnom of fire.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 5:22.
Mt.18:10. Make you sure do not despise one of these little ones. For I say to you that their angels in the heavens always see the face of my Father who is in the heavens.
Mt.18:11. [For the Son of Man came to save those who are destroyed.]
Mt.18:12. What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, but one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and seek the one that has gone astray?
Mt.18:13. And if he finds it, truly, I say to you that he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that have not gone astray.
Mt.18:14. Thus it is not the will of your Father who is in the heavens that one of these little ones perish.
Mt.18:15. But if your brother sins against you, go and reprove him between the two of you. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
Mt.18:16. But if he does not hear you, take with you one or two other people so that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
Mt.18:17. But if he disobeys them, tell it to the called-out community. But if he disobeys the called-out community, regard him as a Gentile or as a tribute collector.
COMMENT: Here again we can see how Gentiles or those of the nations were regarded by Jews. This is very different from what Paul teaches in his latter letters. He teaches that the nations have the favored position.
Mt.18:18. Truly, I say to you that whatever you bind on the earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on the earth will be loosed in heaven.
Mt.18:19. Again, truly, I say to you that if two of you agree on the earth concerning any matter, whatever they may ask, it will be given to them from my Father who is in the heavens.
Mt.18:20. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there in the midst of them."
Mt.18:21. Then Peter approached him and said, "Lord, how many times should I forgive my brother who sins against me? Until seven times?"
Mt.18:22. Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you until seven times, but until seventy times seven.
Mt.18:23. Therefore the kingdom of the heavens is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.
Mt.18:24. But when he began to settle, one debtor was brought to him who owed tens of thousands of talents.
Mt.18:25. But since he could not repay it, the lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife and children and all that he had so that payment could be made.
Mt.18:26. Therefore, the servant fell down and worshiped him. He said, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you all!'
Mt.18:27. But the lord of that servant had compassion and released him. He forgave him the loan.
Mt.18:28. But after the servant departed, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii. Then he seized him and choked him, and he said, 'Pay what you owe!'
Mt.18:29. Therefore, his fellow servant fell down and begged him. He said, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you!'
Mt.18:30. But he did not want to. But he went away and cast him into jail until he payed what he owed.
Mt.18:31. Therefore, his fellow servants saw what happened. And they were exceedingly grieved. So, they went and reported all of these things to their lord.
Mt.18:32. Then his lord called him and said to him, 'Wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.
Mt.18:33. Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?'
Mt.18:34. And his lord was angry and delivered him over to the inquisitors, until he repaid all he owed.
COMMENT: The noun here is basanistēs. See Matthew 4:24 for an explanation of its cognate basanos.
Mt.18:35. Thus also my heavenly Father will do to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from the heart."
Mt.19:01. After Jesus finished saying these things, he departed from Galilee and came into the regions of Judea on the other side of the Jordan.
Mt.19:02. And many crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
Mt.19:03. And the Pharisees came to him and they tempted him and said, "Is it authorized for a man to divorce his wife for any cause?"
Mt.19:04. But he answered and said, "Have you never read that the One who created them from the beginning made them male and female?
Mt.19:05. And He said, 'On account of this, a man will leave his father and mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.'
Mt.19:06. So, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, that which God has joined together, let not man separate."
Mt.19:07. They say to him, "Therefore, why did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?"
Mt.19:08. He said to them to them, "Moses, because of your hardheartedness, permitted you to divorce your wives. But it was not this way in the beginning.
Mt.19:09. But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for prostitution, and marries another commits adultery. And the one who marries a divorced woman commits adultery."
Mt.19:10. The disciples said to him, "If this is the case between a man and a woman, it is better not to marry."
Mt.19:11. But he said to them, "Not everyone can receive this saying. It is for those to whom it has been given.
Mt.19:12. For there are eunuchs who were born as eunuchs out of the womb of their mother. And there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by people. And there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs because of the kingdom of the heavens. The one able to receive it, let him receive it."
Mt.19:13. Then children were brought to him. This was so that he might place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.
Mt.19:14. But Jesus said, "Permit the children and do not hinder them to come to me. For the kingdom of the heavens belongs to such as these."
Mt.19:15. And he placed his hands on them, and then he departed from there.
Mt.19:16. After this, one person came to him and said, "Teacher, what good things should I do in order to obtain eon-defined life?"
COMMENT: Eon-defined life is life characterized by the conditions (characteristics) of the following eons. It does not necessarily refer to a length of life, but the to quality of life. See the comment for Matthew 18:8.
Mt.19:17. But he said to him, "Why do you ask me concerning that which is good? There is one who is good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Mt.19:18. He said to him, "Which ones?" But Jesus said, "'Do not murder.' 'Do not commit adultery.' 'Do not steal.' 'Do not bear false testimony.'
Mt.19:19. 'Honor father and mother,' and 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Mt.19:20. The young man said to him, "All these I have kept. What do I still lack?"
Mt.19:21. Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor. Then you will have treasure in the heavens. After this, come and follow me."
Mt.19:22. But when he heard this word, the young man went away grieved. For he had many possessions.
Mt.19:23. But Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you that a rich person will enter into the kingdom of the heavens with difficulty.
Mt.19:24. But again I say to you that it is easier for a camel to enter through the hole of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God."
Mt.19:25. But when the disciples heard this, they were exceedingly astonished, and they said, "Then, who can be saved?"
Mt.19:26. But Jesus looked at them and said, "This is impossible for people, but all things are possible for God."
COMMENT: God is Savior. Man contributes nothing to his salvation. In a relative sense, we live as if our will were partially free. But in an absolute sense, all things are from God. He works all things through us, although we very rarely notice it.
Mt.19:27. Then Peter answered and said to him, "We have left all things and followed you. Therefore, what will we receive?"
Mt.19:28. But Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones and you will judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
COMMENT: All power in heaven and earth has already been given to Jesus (Matthew 28:20). Sitting on the throne of his glory refers to a demonstration of his power. This demonstration of power will occur at several times in the future. It will happen when he reigns from heaven during the pre-millenial kingdom. It will also happen when he destroys Anti-christ and reigns on earth for one-thousand years. It will also happen at his other appearings (1 Timothy 6:14-15). This expression also occurs in Matthew 25:31.
Mt.19:29. And everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, on account of my name, he will receive a hundred-fold and inherit eon-defined life.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 18:8.
Mt.19:30. But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."
Mt.20:01. "For the kingdom of the heavens is like the master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.
Mt.20:02. But after the workers agreed to one denarius a day, he dispatched them into his vineyard.
Mt.20:03. And he went out around the third hour, and he saw others standing in the market idle.
Mt.20:04. And he said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is right.'
Mt.20:05. Therefore, they went. Again he went out around the sixth and ninth hour, and he did likewise.
Mt.20:06. But around the eleventh, he went out and found others standing. He said to them, 'Why did you stand here idle all day long?'
Mt.20:07. They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard.'
Mt.20:08. But when evening came, the lord of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the workers and give to them their wages, beginning from the last up to the first.'
Mt.20:09. And those hired about the eleventh hour came and received one denarius apiece.
Mt.20:10. And when the first ones came, they thought that they would receive more. But they also received one denarius apiece.
Mt.20:11. But when they received it, they murmured against the master of the house.
Mt.20:12. They said, 'These last ones worked for only one hour, and you made them equal with us who bore the burden of the day and the burning heat.'
Mt.20:13. But he answered one of them and said, 'Friend, I did nothing wrong to you. Did you not agree with me for one denarius?
Mt.20:14. Take what is yours and go. I wanted to give to this last one as to you also.
Mt.20:15. Am I not allowed to do what I want with my own things? Or is your eye wicked because I am good?'
Mt.20:16. Thus the last will be first, and the first will be last."
Mt.20:17. And Jesus went up to Jerusalem and he took aside the twelve disciples by themselves. Then he said to them on the way,
Mt.20:18. "We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes. And they will condemn him to death.
Mt.20:19. And they will deliver him over to the Gentiles to mock him and scourge him and crucify him. And on the third day he will be raised."
Mt.20:20. The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons, and she worshiped him and requested something from him.
Mt.20:21. But he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that my two sons may be seated one at your right and one at your left in your kingdom.
Mt.20:22. But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you request. Are you able to drink the cup which I am going to drink?" They said to him, "We are able."
Mt.20:23. He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and at my left is not mine to grant. It will be granted to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
Mt.20:24. And when they other ten heard it, they were indignant concerning the two brothers.
Mt.20:25. But Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
Mt.20:26. It will not be this way among you. But whoever wants to be great among you, he will be your servant.
Mt.20:27. And whoever wants to be first among you, he will be your slave.
Mt.20:28. It is the same way with the Son of Man. He did not come to be served, but he came to serve and to give his soul as a ransom for many."
COMMENT: Verses 25-28 describe the ideal. The rulers of the nations should use their authority to serve the people. However, they often lord it over them and are abusive and brutal. Israel is prophesied to become a great kingdom. Israel will guide of the nations and lead them into righteousness. Nations today are filled with pride and arrogance when they are exalted. Rather, they should be filled with humility and gratitude before the God who gave them such strength. Also, this verse says, "to give his soul a ransom for many." But Paul said in 1 Timothy 2:6 "who gave himself a ransom for all." So which one is it? Many or all? It is both. Many can include all while emphasizing how great the number is. At the same time, however, this verse is most likely simply referring to Jesus' ministry to Israel. He came for them in a relative sense, although he came for all in an absolute sense. Thus, in a relative sense, he came so that many in Israel would be redeemed.
Mt.20:29. And when they departed from Jericho, a great crowd followed him.
Mt.20:30. And two blind people sat beside the road. And when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David."
Mt.20:31. But the crowd rebuked them and told them to remain silent. But they cried out all the more, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David."
Mt.20:32. Then Jesus stood and called them. He said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"
Mt.20:33. They said to him, "Lord, we want you to open our eyes."
Mt.20:34. Then Jesus had compassion on them, and he touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
Mt.21:01. Then Jesus dispatched two disciples when they came near to Jerusalem and came into Bethphage on the Mount of Olives.
Mt.21:02. Jesus said to them, "Go into the village facing you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied up. There will also be a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to me.
Mt.21:03. If anyone says anything to you, say to them, 'The Lord needs them.' Then that person will immediately dispatch them."
Mt.21:04. This happened in order to fulfill the word spoken through Isaiah the prophet.
Mt.21:05. "Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold your king comes to you. He is meek and rides on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a yoke-beast.'"
Mt.21:06. Then the disciples went and did just as Jesus ordered them.
Mt.21:07. They brought the donkey and the colt, and they placed their garments on them. Then he sat on them.
Mt.21:08. But a great crowd spread their clothes on the road, and other people cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
Mt.21:09. But the crowds that preceded him and those that followed him cried out, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"
Mt.21:10. When he entered into Jerusalem, the entire city was stirred up, and they said, "Who is this?"
Mt.21:11. But the crowds said, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of Galilee."
COMMENT: The Pharisees would have ridiculed these people. They would have said, "No prophet comes out of Galilee!" (John 7:52). Although the crowds did not know the scriptures well, they knew that Jesus was no mere man.
Mt.21:12. And Jesus entered into the temple, and he cast out all those who were selling and buying in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling doves.
Mt.21:13. And he said, "It is written, 'My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you have made it a cave of robbers."
Mt.21:14. And blind people and lame people came to him when he was in the temple, and he healed them.
Mt.21:15. But the chief priests and the scribes saw the marvelous things that he did, and they also saw the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" This made them indignant.
Mt.21:16. And they said to him, "Do you hear what these are saying?" But Jesus said to them, "Yes. Have you never read that 'Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise'?"
Mt.21:17. And after he left them, he departed the city and went to Bethany, and he spent the night there.
Mt.21:18. But in the morning, he returned into the city, and he hungered.
Mt.21:19. And he saw one fig tree on the road. But when he came to it, he found nothing on it except leaves only. Then he said to it, "May you no longer bear fruit for the eon." And the fig tree withered immediately.
COMMENT: The fig tree most likely represents Israel. They have born no fruit as a nation all this time (during this eon). They will bear fruit in the next eon in the kingdom.
Mt.21:20. And when the disciples saw this, they marveled and said, "How immediately is the fig tree withered."
Mt.21:21. But Jesus answered and said to them, "Truly, I say to you that if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do this to the fig tree, but if you say to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and cast into the sea!' it will happen.
Mt.21:22. And everything, whatever you ask in prayer, if you believe, you will receive it."
Mt.21:23. And after he came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him while he was teaching. They said to him, "By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority?"
Mt.21:24. But Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one thing. If you answer me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things."
Mt.21:25. From where was the baptism of John? Was it from heaven or from men?" But they discussed among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say to us, 'Therefore, why did you not believe him?'
Mt.21:26. But if we say, 'From men,' we fear the crowd. For they all regard John as a prophet."
Mt.21:27. And they answered Jesus, "We do not know." Then he also said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Mt.21:28. But what do you think? A man had two sons. The man came to the first and said, 'Child, go work in the vineyard today.'
Mt.21:29. But he answered, 'I do not want to.' But afterward, he regretted it and went.
Mt.21:30. Then the man approached the second, and he said likewise. But he answered, 'I will, lord!' But he did not go.
Mt.21:31. Which of the two did the will of the father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes will enter into the kingdom of God before you."
Mt.21:32. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. But when you saw it, you did not even have regrets in order that you might believe him.
Mt.21:33. Hear another parable: There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and placed a fence around it. Then he dug a winepress in it and built a tower. After this, he leased it to farmers and went on a journey.
Mt.21:34. But when the season of the fruits drew near, he dispatched his servants to the farmers to receive his fruits.
Mt.21:35. And the farmers seized his servants, and they beat one, but killed another and stoned yet another.
Mt.21:36. Again he dispatched other servants, more than the first. And they did likewise to them.
Mt.21:37. But afterward, he dispatched to them his son. He said, 'They will respect my son.'
Mt.21:38. But the farmers, when they saw the son, said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come! We should kill him and take his inheritance.'
Mt.21:39. And they seized him and cast him out of the vineyard, and then they killed him.
Mt.21:40. Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?"
Mt.21:41. They said to him, "Those evil ones! He will terribly destroy them, and he will lease out the vineyard to other farmers who will give him the fruits in their seasons."
Mt.21:42. Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures, 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the head of the corner. The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.'
Mt.21:43. Therefore, I say to you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and it will be given to a people who will produce its fruits.
COMMENT: The word translated as "people" is usually translated as "Gentile" or "nation." However, if verse 45 is considered, it is obvious that this parable was directed toward the chief priests and Pharisees. It does not refer to the nation of Israel as a whole. Authority in the kingdom of God was taken from the chief priests and Pharisees and given to the small flock in Luke 12. This small flock includes the twelve apostles who will be exercising authority in the kingdom. They will sit on twelve thrones and judge the twelve tribes of Israel. This verse does not teach replacement theology. Christian churches have not replaced Israel, and they have not become spiritual Israel (relevant verses in Paul's early letters will be explained later). Paul does teach that a changed did occur. But this change has nothing to do with replacing Israel. Israel's administration has been temporarily suspended, and a new administration that includes all nations has been implemented.
Mt.21:44. And the one who falls on this stone will be shattered. But it will crush the one on whom it falls."
Mt.21:45. But when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard this parable, they knew that he spoke it concerning them.
Mt.21:46. And they sought to seize him, but they feared the crowd. For they regarded him as a prophet.
Mt.22:01. And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables.
Mt.22:02. "The kingdom of the heavens is like a king who made a wedding feast for his son.
Mt.22:03. And he dispatched his servants to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast. But they did not want to come.
Mt.22:04. Again he dispatched other servants and said, 'Tell those who have been called that I have prepared my feast. My oxen and fattened animals have been slaughtered, and everything is prepared. Come to the wedding feast!'
Mt.22:05. But they were not concerned. And they went away, one to his own field, and another to his business.
Mt.22:06. But the rest of them seized his servants, and they mistreated them and killed them.
Mt.22:07. But the king was angry, and he sent his troops to destroy those murderers and set their city on fire.
Mt.22:08. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is prepared, but those who were called were not worthy.
Mt.22:09. Therefore, go into the main roads, and invite to the wedding feast as many people as you can find.'
Mt.22:10. And the servants went into the roads, and they gathered together everyone whom they found, both bad people and good people. And the wedding feast was filled with guests.
Mt.22:11. But the king entered to see the guests, and he saw a man not dressed in wedding clothes.
Mt.22:12. And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you enter here without wedding clothes?' But he was silent.
Mt.22:13. Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him feet and hands, and cast him into outer darkness.' There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth there.
Mt.22:14. For many are called, but few are chosen."
Mt.22:15. Then the Pharisees went and took counsel so that they could catch him in his words.
Mt.22:16. And they dispatched their disciples with the Herodians to him. They said, "Teacher, we know that you are true, and we know that you teach the way of God in truth. You are impartial and do not show favoritism.
Mt.22:17. Therefore, tell us what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"
Mt.22:18. But Jesus knew their wickedness and said, "Why do you tempt me, you hypocrites?
Mt.22:19. Show me the coin for the tax." Then they brought to him a denarius.
Mt.22:20. And he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?"
Mt.22:21. They said to him, "Caesar's." Then he said to them, "Therefore, pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
Mt.22:22. And when they heard this, they marveled and left him, and they departed.
Mt.22:23. In that day some Sadducees approached him. They say that there is no resurrection. And they asked him,
Mt.22:24. "Teacher, Moses said if someone dies having no children, his brother should marry the widow and have children for his brother.
Mt.22:25. But there were seven brothers with us. The first married and died without having children. Therefore, he left his wife to his brother.
Mt.22:26. Likewise the second brother also, and the third, until the seventh.
Mt.22:27. But, after all of them died, the woman also died.
Mt.22:28. Therefore, in the resurrection whose wife will she be of the seven? For they all had her.
Mt.22:29. But Jesus answered them, "You are mistaken and you do not know the scriptures or the power of God.
Mt.22:30. For in the resurrection they will not marry or be given in marriage, but they will be as the angels of God in heaven.
Mt.22:31. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what was said to you by God?
Mt.22:32. 'I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' He is not the God of the dead, but of the living."
COMMENT: According to the context, Jesus is proving the resurrection here. The resurrection is still future. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are still dead, and they have no consciousness or knowledge of God or anything (Psalm 6:5, Ecclesiastes 9:5). But God is not the God of the dead, so this proves that there must be a future resurrection.
Mt.22:33. And when the crowds heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
Mt.22:34. But when the Pharisees heard that he silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together in one place.
Mt.22:35. And one of them who was a lawyer tried to tempt him with a question.
Mt.22:36. "Teacher, what is the greatest commandment in the law?"
Mt.22:37. He said to him, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'
Mt.22:38. This is the greatest and first commandment.
Mt.22:39. But the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
Mt.22:40. On these two commandments hang the entire law and the prophets."
Mt.22:41. But since the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Mt.22:42. "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "David's."
Mt.22:43. He said to them, "Therefore, how does David, in spirit, call him Lord. For he said,
Mt.22:44. 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right, until I place your enemies under your feet"'?
Mt.22:45. Therefore, if David calls him 'Lord,' how is he his son?"
Mt.22:46. And no one was able to answer him at all, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Mt.23:01. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples.
Mt.23:02. "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat.
Mt.23:03. Therefore, observe everything they tell you to do, but do not do according to their works. For they say, but do not do.
Mt.23:04. They bind heavy burdens and place them on the shoulders of men. But, they themselves are not willing to even lift a finger to move them.
Mt.23:05. They do everything to be seen by people. For they broaden their phylacteries and enlarge the edges.
Mt.23:06. And they love the place of honor at the feasts, and the first seats in the synagogues,
Mt.23:07. and they love greetings in the markets and to be called by people 'Rabbi.'
Mt.23:08. But do not be called 'Rabbi,' for one is your teacher, and you are all brothers.
Mt.23:09. And do not call anyone your father on the earth, for one is your heavenly Father.
Mt.23:10. And do not be called teachers, because one is your teacher, the Christ.
Mt.23:11. But the greatest one among you will be your servant.
Mt.23:12. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Mt.23:13. But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you shut the kingdom of the heavens in front of people. For you do not enter, and you do not permit those who are going in to enter.
Mt.23:14. [Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you devour the houses of widows and for a pretense make long prayers. Because of this, you will receive a greater judgment.]
Mt.23:15. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you travel across sea and the dry land to make one proselyte. And when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a son of the Valley of Hinnom as you are.
Mt.23:16. Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the sanctuary, it is nothing. But whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is obligated.'
Mt.23:17. Fools and blind ones! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that sanctifies the gold?
Mt.23:18. And you also say, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing. But whoever swears by the gift on it is obligated.'
Mt.23:19. Blind ones! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
Mt.23:20. Therefore the one who swears by the altar swears by it and by all that is on it.
Mt.23:21. And the one who swears by the sanctuary swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
Mt.23:22. And the one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one who sits on it.
Mt.23:23. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you pay a tenth of mint and dill and cumin, but you neglect the weightier things of the law -- judgment and mercy and faith. You should have done these things, while not neglecting those other things.
Mt.23:24. Blind guides who strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel!
Mt.23:25. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but the inside is full of plunder and lack of self control.
Mt.23:26. Blind Pharisees! First cleanse the inside of the cup and the dish in order that the outside may become clean also.
Mt.23:27. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you are like whitewashed graves, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of dead people and all uncleanness.
Mt.23:28. Thus you also appear righteous outwardly to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Mt.23:29. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees -- hypocrites! -- because you build the graves of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous.
Mt.23:30. And you say, 'If we were alive in the days of our fathers, we would not have been participants with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'
Mt.23:31. So that you testify against yourselves that you are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.
Mt.23:32. And you -- fill up the measure of your fathers!
Mt.23:33. Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How will you escape the judgment of the Valley of Hinnom?
COMMENT: These verses make it clear that the future is not bright for the scribes and Pharisees. They most likely will be cast into the Valley of Hinnom. If this is the case, who will become the leaders of the nation? None other than the little flock of Luke 12! This was one of the goals of Jesus' earthly ministry. He came to replace the leadership of the nation with his own disciples.
Mt.23:34. Therefore, I dispatch to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city.
Mt.23:35. This is so that you will become liable for all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel until the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
Mt.23:36. Truly, I say to you, All these things will come on this generation.
COMMENT: This was fulfilled when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.
Mt.23:37. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been dispatched to her! How often I wanted to gather your children like a hen gathers her young birds under her wings, but you were not willing!
Mt.23:38. Therefore, your house is left to you desolate.
COMMENT: Israel has remained desolate up until the present day.
Mt.23:39. For I say to you that you will not see me again until you should say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'"
COMMENT: There will come a day when they will willingly say, "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!"
Mt.24:01. And when Jesus came out of the temple and was departing, his disciples approached him to show him the buildings of the temple.
Mt.24:02. But he answered them, "Do you see all these things? Truly, I say to you that a stone will not be left on a stone here. All will be thrown down."
Mt.24:03. But when he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, his disciples approached him privately and said, "Tell us when these things will be, and what is the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the eon?"
COMMENT: A careful comparison of Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 will show that Jesus *might* have answered these questions twice from two different locations. There are a total of three questions. The two questions asked in Mark 13 and Luke 21 are similar, and they basically concern the same issue (i.e., the destruction of the temple). However, one of the questions in Matthew 24 is different (i.e., the sign of Jesus' presence and the conclusion of the eon). The prophecies given in Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 concern these three questions. In Matthew 24:3, the first question concerns the destruction of the temple. The second question concerns Jesus' presence and the end of the eon. The destruction of the temple will occur shortly following the resurrection the Jesus. The sign of Jesus' presence and the end of the eon are in the far future after the disciples are resurrected for the premillenial kingdom (See the comment for Matthew 24:9). Compare Luke 21:12 with Matthew 24:9 in context. It is clear that they refer to two different time periods. The first question regarding the destruction of the temple is answered in Mark 13:9-13 and Luke 21:12-24. Matthew deals exclusively with the second question. Luke deals with the first and second question. Mark seems to be a combination of the responses given in Matthew and Luke. Regarding the use of the word parousia, which is translated here as "presence," it is not a technical term. Many commentators say that it refers to single significant time in the future when Jesus will come in glory. However, it simply means "presence." A cognate of this word is apousia, which has the opposite meaning "absence." Both terms are used non-technically in Philippians 2:12. This word is not used exclusively to refer to the presence of Jesus. Paul teaches us in 1 Timothy 6:14-15 that there is not just one appearing of Jesus. There will be multiple future appearings.
Mt.24:04. Then Jesus answered them, "Beware that no one misleads you.
Mt.24:05. For many will come in my name and say, 'I am the Christ.' And they will mislead many.
Mt.24:06. But you are going to hear about wars and reports of wars. Make sure that you are not troubled, for these things must occur, but the consummation is not yet.
Mt.24:07. For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in places.
Mt.24:08. But all these things are the beginning of birth pains.
COMMENT: Jesus says these are the beginning of birth pains. However, has the world ever been without threats of war, war, conflicts, earthquakes, and famines? These things have always existed. Therefore, what is Jesus talking about? To answer these questions, it is necessary to understand that there will be a long period of peace and tranquility on the earth for hundreds of years during the premillenial kingdom. (We believe that this period will include the 70 weeks prophesied by Daniel. In other words, we believe those 70 weeks are still future.) This will be when the kingdom is restored to Israel. During this time, Israel will be a guide to the nations. This is when Jesus will reign from heaven. Toward the end of this period, spiritual conditions begin to deteriorate. Wars and reports of war and conflicts and famines and earthquakes will again begin to occur. Since these things had not occurred for hundreds of years, people will be troubled when they begin to happen. This is the reason why Jesus says, "Make sure that you are not troubled." In our current world, it is commonplace to hear about these things. People who are directly afflicted are troubled, but people in far off lands who only hear about these things through news media have become insensitive to such reports. This prophecy only makes sense if one understand the existence of the premillenial kingdom.
Mt.24:09. Then they will deliver you up to affliction, and they will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations because of my name.
COMMENT: Luke says that before these things occur some of them would have been put to death (Luke 21:12-16). Luke 21 is mostly about the events related to the destruction of Jerusalem. However, Matthew has the same disciples being killed again hundreds of years later. How can this be? The answer is that they will be resurrected for the premillenial kingdom period. This resurrection is not to immortality. It is a common resurrection from the dead. Jesus resurrected many people during his life. But we can be pretty certain that these people died again. It will be exactly the same when the disciples and many others are resurrected during the premillenial kingdom. This is the only way this prophecy can be fulfilled. There are hints about this in other scriptures, too. We will look at those verses later.
Mt.24:10. And then many will be offended, and they will deliver one another up, and they will hate one another.
Mt.24:11. And many false prophets will arise and mislead many.
Mt.24:12. And because lawlessness will increase, the love of many will grow cold.
Mt.24:13. But the one who endures to the consummation will be saved.
Mt.24:14. And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in the whole inhabited earth for a testimony to all the nations. And then the consummation will come.
COMMENT: This proclamation to the nations is different from what is taking place today. During the kingdom period, the proclamation will be made by Israel and under their rule. Today, the good news is free to be proclaimed to all people. It has no dependence on Israel.
Mt.24:15. Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the one who reads understand),
Mt.24:16. then let those in Judea flee into the mountains.
Mt.24:17. Do not let the person who is on the housetop descend to take things out of his house,
Mt.24:18. And do not let the one who is in the field turn back behind to pick up his garment.
Mt.24:19. But woe to those who are pregnant and those nursing their babies in those days!
Mt.24:20. But pray that your flight may not occur in winter or on a sabbath,
COMMENT: The sabbath is still being kept when these things happen. However, people in today's current administration are not obligated to keep the sabbath (Colossians 2:16).
Mt.24:21. For there will be great affliction at that time, such as has not occurred from the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will occur.
Mt.24:22. And except those days be shortened, no flesh at all would be saved. But because of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened.
Mt.24:23. Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is Christ!' Or, 'Here!' do not believe him.
Mt.24:24. For there will arise false christs and false prophets, and they will give great signs and wonders in order to mislead people, and if possible, even to mislead the chosen ones.
Mt.24:25. Remember now that I have told you these things beforehand.
Mt.24:26. Therefore, if anyone says to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness!' do not go out. 'Look, he is in the inner room!' do not believe it.
Mt.24:27. For just as the lightning comes from the east and appears until the west, thus will be the presence of the Son of Man.
Mt.24:28. Wherever the corpse is, there the eagles will gather.
Mt.24:29. But immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
Mt.24:30. And then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in the heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and much glory.
COMMENT: This is not the same "presence" described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16. See that verse for further explanation.
Mt.24:31. And he will dispatch his angels with a great trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones out of the four winds, from the ends of the heavens to their ends.
Mt.24:32. But learn the parable from the fig tree: Whenever its branch becomes tender, and its leaves sprout out, you know that summer is near.
Mt.24:33. Thus you, also, whenever you see all these things, know that he is near, even at the doors.
Mt.24:34. Truly, I say to you that this generation will never pass away until all these things happen.
COMMENT: This passage has troubled many commentators. We propose two possible interpretations: "This generation" could be relative to the prophecy. In other words, "this generation" would equal "the generation of this prophecy." However, "this generation" may literally refers to the generation that was alive when these words were spoken. How can that be? It can be because they will be resurrected for the premillenial kingdom. Many will still be alive when these things occur on the earth. This is consistent with Revelation 1:7.
Mt.24:35. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Mt.24:36. But concerning that day and hour no one knows -- neither the messengers of the heavens, nor yet the Son -- Only the Father knows.
Mt.24:37. For just as the days of Noah, thus will be the presence of the Son of Man.
Mt.24:38. For in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark.
Mt.24:39. And they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away. Thus also will be the presence of the Son of Man.
COMMENT: A few commentators think that verses 37-39 mean that the Nephilim of Genesis 6 will reappear on the earth. This may be true, but these verses cannot prove it. These verses are emphasizing the easy-going and complacent attitude of people right before the flood occurred. It will be the same right before the presence of the Son of Man. Nothing explicitly is said here of the Nephilim.
Mt.24:40. Then two people will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.
Mt.24:41. Two people will be grinding at a millstone; one will be taken and one left.
Mt.24:42. Therefore, watch, because you do not know what day your Lord will come.
Mt.24:43. But understand this: if the master of the house knew what time the thief would be coming, he would have watched and would not have allowed his house to be broken into.
Mt.24:44. Therefore, you also be ready. For the Son of Man will come at an hour that you do not expect.
Mt.24:45. Consequently, who is the faithful and wise servant whom the lord has put over his house to give them food in season?
Mt.24:46. Blessed is that servant whom his lord finds doing this.
Mt.24:47. Truly, I say to you that he will put him over all his possessions.
Mt.24:48. But if that evil servant says in his heart, 'My lord is delaying,'
Mt.24:49. and begins to beat his fellow servants and eat and drink with the drunken,
Mt.24:50. then the lord of that servant will come in a day that he does not anticipate, and in an hour that he does not expect.
Mt.24:51. And he will cut him into two pieces and will appoint his portion with the hypocrites. There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth there."
Mt.25:01. "Then the kingdom of the heavens will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Mt.25:02. But five of them were foolish and five were wise.
Mt.25:03. For the foolish ones, took their lamps, but did not take olive oil with them.
Mt.25:04. But the wise ones took olive oil in flasks with their lamps.
Mt.25:05. But while the bridegroom delayed, they all napped and slept.
Mt.25:06. But there was a shout in the middle of the night, 'Look, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'
Mt.25:07. Then all those virgins got up, and they prepared their lamps.
Mt.25:08. But the foolish ones said to the wise ones, 'Give us some of your olive oil, because our lamps are going out.'
Mt.25:09. But the wise ones answered, 'No, otherwise there might not be enough for both of us. But go to those who sell and buy for yourselves.'
Mt.25:10. But when they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared entered with him into the wedding feast, and the door was shut.
Mt.25:11. But afterward the rest of the virgins came also, and they said, 'Lord, lord, open to us!'
Mt.25:12. But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you that I do not know you!'
Mt.25:13. Therefore, be watchful, because you do not know the day or the hour.
Mt.25:14. For it is like a man traveling. He called his own servants and delivered over to them his possessions.
Mt.25:15. And he gave five talents to one servant, two talents to another, and one talent to another, each according to his own ability. And he went traveling immediately.
Mt.25:16. But the one who received five talents went out and traded with them and gained another five talents.
Mt.25:17. Likewise, the one with the two talents; he gained another two.
Mt.25:18. But the one who received one talent went away and dug up the earth and hid his lord's silver.
Mt.25:19. But after a long time, the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
Mt.25:20. Then the one who received the five talents approached him and brought another five talents. He said, 'Lord, you delivered over to me five talents. Look, I have gained another five talents!'
Mt.25:21. His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord!'
Mt.25:22. But the one with the two talents approached him and said, 'Lord, you delivered over to me two talents. Look, I have gained another two talents!'
Mt.25:23. His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will appoint you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord!'
Mt.25:24. But the one who had received the one talent also approached him and said, 'Lord, I knew that you are a hard man. You reap where you did not sow, and you gather where you did not scatter.
Mt.25:25. And I was afraid, so I went away and I hid your talent in the earth. Look, you have what is yours!'
Mt.25:26. But his lord answered him, 'You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I did not sow, and I gather where I did not scatter.
Mt.25:27. Therefore, you should have given my silver to the money changers. Then when I came, I could have received it with interest.
Mt.25:28. Therefore, take from him the talent and give it to the one who has ten talents.
Mt.25:29. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even that which he has will be taken from him.
Mt.25:30. And cast that useless servant into outer darkness. There will be lamentation and gnashing of teeth there.
Mt.25:31. But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 19:28.
Mt.25:32. And all the nations will be gathered before him. And he will separate them from one another just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
COMMENT: Jesus says all nations. He did not say all people. This is important. This is a judgment of nations. Their judgment depends on how they treated Israel during their time of need. The righteous nations will enjoy the millennial kingdom (Christ's one-thousand year reign according to Revelation 20).
Mt.25:33. And he will set the sheep at his right, but the goats at his left.
Mt.25:34. Then the King will say to those at his right, 'Come, blessed of my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Mt.25:35. For I was hungry and you gave me food to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took me in;
Mt.25:36. I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me; I was in jail and you came to visit me.'
Mt.25:37. Then the righteous ones will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and we gave you something to drink?
Mt.25:38. When did we see you as a stranger and took you in, or naked and we clothed you?
Mt.25:39. When did we see you sick, or in jail, and we came to you?'
Mt.25:40. And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you that to the extent that you did it to one of these least of my brothers, you did it for me.'
Mt.25:41. Then he will say to those at his left. 'Go away from me, you accursed ones. Go into the eon-defined fire prepared for the Slanderer and his angels.'
COMMENT: See the comment for Matthew 18:8.
Mt.25:42. For I was hungry and you did not give me anything to eat; I was thirsty and you did not give me anything drink;
Mt.25:43. I was a stranger and you did not take me in; I was naked and you did not clothe me; I was sick and in jail and you did not look after me.'
Mt.25:44. Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and we did not serve you?'
Mt.25:45. Then he will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you that to the extent that you did not do it to one of these least ones, you did not do it to me.'
Mt.25:46. And these will go away into eon-defined pruning, but the righteous ones into eon-defined life."
COMMENT: Eon-defined pruning is chastisement characterized by the conditions of the eon. The Greek word kolasis literally means "to cut off." It was used in reference to pruning. Pruning is done for the benefit of the receiver. Therefore, this word refers to punishment that corrects the offender. In God's "correction facility," people and nations are successfully "corrected." On the other hand, eon-defined life is life characterized by the conditions of the eon. Those who receive eon-defined life will play an instrumental role in carrying out God's plan for the eons (1 Corinthians 6:2-3; Ephesians 2:7, 3:10-11; Revelation 22:5, etc.).>
Mt.26:01. When Jesus finished saying all of these things, he said to his disciples,
Mt.26:02. "You know that after two days is the Passover. The Son of Man is going to be delivered up to be crucified."
Mt.26:03. Then the chief priests and the elders of the people were gathered in the courtyard of the chief priest Caiaphas.
Mt.26:04. And they decided that they should seize Jesus by deceit and should kill him.
Mt.26:05. But they said, "Not during the festival. Otherwise, the people may riot.
Mt.26:06. But when Jesus came into Bethany, he was in the house of Simon the leper.
Mt.26:07. And a woman who had a vase of very expensive perfume approached him. And she poured it on his head while he sat at the table.
Mt.26:08. But when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, and they said, "Why this waste?
Mt.26:09. For this could have been sold for a lot of money and given to the poor."
Mt.26:10. But when Jesus knew this, he said to them, "Why do you trouble this woman? For she has done a good deed for me.
Mt.26:11. For you will always have poor people among you, but you will not always have me.
Mt.26:12. For she put this perfume on my body in order to prepare for my burial.
Mt.26:13. Truly, I say to you that wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."
Mt.26:14. Then one of the twelve, Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests.
Mt.26:15. He said, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" Therefore, they offered him thirty pieces of silver.
Mt.26:16. After this, he sought an opportune season to deliver him up.
Mt.26:17. But on the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the passover?"
Mt.26:18. But he said, "Go into the city and you will find a certain man. Say to him, 'The teacher says, "My season is near. I will keep the passover with you and with my disciples."'"
Mt.26:19. And the disciples did as Jesus commanded them, and they prepared the passover.
Mt.26:20. But when evening came, he reclined at the table with the twelve disciples.
Mt.26:21. And while they were eating, he said, "Truly, I say to you that one of you will deliver me up."
Mt.26:22. And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each one of them began to say to him, "Surely not I, Lord?"
Mt.26:23. But he answered, "The who dips his hand with me in the bowl is the one who will deliver me up.
Mt.26:24. The Son of Man goes just as it is written concerning him. But woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is delivered up. Good were it for him if that man were not born."
COMMENT: This is the correct translation of the Greek. In other words, it would be good for the Son of Man if Judas were not born. That is the meaning. Jesus is speaking as a human being. As a human being, no one would enjoy being betrayed and killed. The translators of the New American Standard Bible 1995 (NASB) admitted this in a footnote. The footnote says: "Lit. for him if that man had not been born." The "Lit." means "literally." The translators of the NASB are admitting that the literal meaning of the Greek is different from their interpretation. This passage has nothing to do with Judas' eternal destiny.
Mt.26:25. But Judas, the one who was doing to deliver him up, answered, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" He says to him, "You have said it."
Mt.26:26. But when they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to the disciples. He said, "Take this and eat it. This is my body."
Mt.26:27. And he took the cup and gave thanks. He gave it to them and said, "Drink from it, all of you.
Mt.26:28. For this is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
COMMENT: All people will be eventually saved (John 4:42, 12:32; Romans 5:18, 11:32; 1 Corinthians 15:22, 15:28, etc.). However, in this verse he is talking about the covenant, which was established with the nation of Israel. The "many" people are the ones who will receive eon-defined life.
Mt.26:29. But I say to you that I will no longer drink from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of my Father."
Mt.26:30. And after they sang a hymn, they went to the Mount of Olives.
Mt.26:31. Then Jesus said to them, "All of you will be offended on account of me this night. For it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
Mt.26:32. But after I am raised, I will go before you into Galilee."
Mt.26:33. But Peter answered him, "Even if everyone is offended on account of you, I will never be offended!"
Mt.26:34. Jesus said to him, "Truly, I say to you that this night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."
Mt.26:35. Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you." Likewise said all of the other disciples also.
Mt.26:36. Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane. He said to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
Mt.26:37. And he took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be grieved and distressed.
Mt.26:38. Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to death. Wait here and stay awake with me."
Mt.26:39. And he went forward a little, but then he fell on his face. He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."
Mt.26:40. And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So, you were not even able to stay awake with me for one hour?
Mt.26:41. Stay awake and pray so that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit is eager, but the flesh is weak."
Mt.26:42. Then he went away again a second time. He prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass away from me unless I drink it, let your will be done."
Mt.26:43. And he came again, and he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
Mt.26:44. And he left them, and went away again, and he prayed a third time saying the same words.
Mt.26:45. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Sleep the remainder and rest! Look, the hour is approaching, and the Son of Man is delivered up to the hands of sinners.
Mt.26:46. Get up! Let us go! Look, the one who delivers me up is near!"
Mt.26:47. And when he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, came. And with him was a great crowd of people with swords and clubs. They came from the chief priests and the elders of the people.
Mt.26:48. But the one who delivered him up gave them a sign. He said, "Whomever I kiss is the one. Seize him."
Mt.26:49. And immediately he approached Jesus and said, "Rejoice, Rabbi!" And he kissed him.
Mt.26:50. But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they approached Jesus and laid hands on him and seized him.
Mt.26:51. And one of those who was with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword. Then he struck the slave of the chief priest and cut off his ear.
Mt.26:52. Then Jesus said to him, "Put back your sword into its place. For everyone who takes the sword will die by the sword.
Mt.26:53. Or do you think that I am not able to ask my Father, and he will immediately set beside me more than twelve legions of angels?
Mt.26:54. But how would the scriptures then be fulfilled that say that it is necessary for this to occur?"
Mt.26:55. In that hour Jesus said to the crowds, "As for a robber, have you come out with swords and clubs to seize me? Every day in the temple I sat teaching and you did not seize me.
Mt.26:56. But all this has occurred in order to fulfill the scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left him and fled.
Mt.26:57. But those who seized Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered.
Mt.26:58. But Peter followed him from afar, until the courtyard of the chief priest. And he entered inside and sat with the officers to see the consummation of these things.
Mt.26:59. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin sought false testimony against Jesus, so that they could put him to death.
Mt.26:60. And even though many false witnesses came forward, they could not find it. But after this, two people approached
Mt.26:61. and said, "This one said, 'I am able to destroy the sanctuary of God, and within three days, I am able to rebuild it.'"
Mt.26:62. And the chief priest stood up and said to him, "Do you answer nothing? What are these things that they people testify against you?"
Mt.26:63. But Jesus was silent. And the chief priest said to him, "I put you under oath by the living God. You must tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
Mt.26:64. Jesus said to him, "You said it. Nevertheless, I say to you that from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Mt.26:65. Then the chief priest tore his clothes and said, "He blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, you have now heard the blasphemy!
Mt.26:66. What do you think? Now, they answered, "He is liable to the punishment of death."
Mt.26:67. Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him
Mt.26:68. and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you?"
Mt.26:69. But Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And one female servant approached him and said, "You were also with Jesus the Galilean."
Mt.26:70. But he denied it in front of them all and said, "I do not know what you are saying!"
Mt.26:71. But when he went to the gate, another one saw him, and she said to them them, "This one was also with Jesus the Nazarene."
Mt.26:72. And again he denied it with an oath. "I do not know the man!"
Mt.26:73. But after a little while, the ones standing approached Peter and said, "Truly you are also one of them, for your accent gives you away."
Mt.26:74. Then he began to curse and to swear. "I do not know the man!" And immediately the cock crowed.
Mt.26:75. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus that he had said, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.
Mt.27:01. When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so that they might put him to death.
Mt.27:02. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate, the ruler.
Mt.27:03. Then Judas, the one who delivered him up, saw that he was condemned and he regretted it. Therefore, he returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.
Mt.27:04. He said, "I sinned in delivering up innocent blood." But they said, "What is it to us? You deal with it."
Mt.27:05. And he threw the silver into the sanctuary and departed. Then he went out and hanged himself.
Mt.27:06. But the chief priests took the silver and said, "We are not allowed to put it in the treasury, because it is the price of blood."
Mt.27:07. But they took counsel, and they purchased with them the Field of the Potter as a burial place for foreigners.
Mt.27:08. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood until today.
Mt.27:09. Then was fulfilled the word spoken through Jeremiah the prophet. "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, which was the price of the one whose price had been set, on whom a price had been set by the sons of Israel,
Mt.27:10. and they gave them for the Field of the Potter, according as the Lord ordered me."
Mt.27:11. But Jesus stood in front of the ruler. And the ruler asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" But Jesus said, "You say it."
Mt.27:12. And when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he answered nothing.
Mt.27:13. Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how much they testify against you?"
Mt.27:14. And he did not answer him at all. This made the ruler marvel greatly.
Mt.27:15. But according to each festival, the ruler was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted.
Mt.27:16. But they had then a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.
Mt.27:17. Therefore when they gathered, Pilate said to them, "Who do you want me to release: Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?"
Mt.27:18. For he knew that they had delivered him up because of envy.
Mt.27:19. But while he sat on the judgment seat, his wife dispatched servants to him and said, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him."
Mt.27:20. But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus destroyed.
Mt.27:21. But the ruler answered them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" But they said, "Barabbas!"
Mt.27:22. Pilate said to them, "Therefore, what should I do with Jesus, the one who is called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"
Mt.27:23. But he said, "What evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly and said, "Let him be crucified!"
Mt.27:24. But Pilate saw that he could accomplish nothing, but rather an uproar was occurring. Therefore, he took water and he washed off his hands in front of the crowd. He said, "I am innocent from the blood of this man. You will see to it."
Mt.27:25. And all the people answered, "His blood be on us and on our children!"
COMMENT: All the people basically put themselves and their children under a curse. As a nation in general, they have lived in separation from God ever since. However, they will be restored eventually. Jesus prayed for them from the cross, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do" (Luke 23:34).
Mt.27:26. Then he released to them Barabbas, but he had Jesus flogged. Then he delivered him up to be crucified.
Mt.27:27. Then the ruler's soldiers took Jesus into the praetorium. And they gathered the whole regiment around him.
Mt.27:28. And they stripped him and they put a scarlet cloak around him.
Mt.27:29. And they braided a crown out of thorns, and they put it on his head and a reed in his right hand. Then they fell on their knees in front of him, and they mocked him, "Rejoice, king of the Jews!"
Mt.27:30. And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on his head.
Mt.27:31. And after they mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak and put his clothes on him. Then they led him away to be crucified.
Mt.27:32. But when they came out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross.
Mt.27:33. And they came to a place called Golgota, which was called the Place of a Skull.
Mt.27:34. Then they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink. And when he tasted it, he did not want to drink it.
Mt.27:35. Then when they crucified him, they divided his clothes and cast lots.
Mt.27:36. And they sat down and kept watch over him there.
Mt.27:37. And they placed on his head his charge written: "This is Jesus, the king of the Jews."
Mt.27:38. Then two robbers were crucified with him, one at the right and one at the left.
Mt.27:39. But the people passing by blasphemed him and shook their heads.
Mt.27:40. They said, "You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and builds it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
Mt.27:41. Likewise the chief priests also, with the scribes and the elders, mocked him. They said,
Mt.27:42. "He saved others! He is not able to save himself! He is the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him!"
Mt.27:43. He trusted in God. Let him rescue him now if he wants him. For he said that 'I am the Son of God'!"
Mt.27:44. But in the same way, the robbers also, who were crucified with him, reproached him.
Mt.27:45. But from the sixth hour darkness came over the whole earth until the ninth hour.
Mt.27:46. But about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, "Eli! Eli! Lema sabachthani?" This meant "My God! My God! Why have you forsaken me?"
Mt.27:47. But when some of the people who were standing there heard this, they said that "He calls for Elijah."
Mt.27:48. And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge and filled it with sour wine. Then he put it on a reed, and he gave it to him to drink.
Mt.27:49. But the rest of the people said, "Let him be! Let us see if Elijah will come to save him."
Mt.27:50. But Jesus cried out again with a great voice, and then he yielded up the spirit.
Mt.27:51. And the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
Mt.27:52. And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
Mt.27:53. And they came out of the tombs after he was raised, and they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
Mt.27:54. But when the centurion and those with him who kept watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and the things that happened, they were exceedingly afraid and said, "Truly this was God's Son!"
Mt.27:55. But there were many women there who watched from afar. They followed Jesus from Galilee and served him.
Mt.27:56. Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Mt.27:57. But around evening, a rich man came from Arimathea. His name was Joseph, and he himself also was a disciple of Jesus.
Mt.27:58. He approached Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given.
Mt.27:59. And he took the body of Jesus, and he wrapped it in linen.
Mt.27:60. Then he placed it in his new tomb which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone over the entrance of the tomb. Then he went away.
Mt.27:61. And Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, and they were sitting opposite the grave.
Mt.27:62. But on the next day, which was after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate.
Mt.27:63. They said, "Lord, we remember that that deceiver said while he was still living, 'After three days I will be raised.'
Mt.27:64. Therefore command that the grave be secured until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples might come and steal him and say to the people, 'He is risen from the dead ones.' And the last deception will be worse than the first."
Mt.27:65. Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go and make it as secure as you know how."
Mt.27:66. But they went and secured the grave, and they sealed the stone and posted the guard.
Mt.28:01. But on the evening of the sabbaths, when it began to dawn into one of the sabbaths, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the grave.
Mt.28:02. And a great earthquake occurred. For the angel of the Lord descending out of heaven, and he approached and rolled away the stone. Then he sat on it.
Mt.28:03. But his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.
Mt.28:04. But the keepers shook from fear of him and became as dead people.
Mt.28:05. But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do not fear. For I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.
Mt.28:06. He is not here. For he was raised, just as he said he would be. Come and see the place where he was lying.
Mt.28:07. Go quickly and tell his disciples that he has been raised from the dead. And he will go ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. See, I have told you."
Mt.28:08. And they went away quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy. They ran to report this to his disciples.
Mt.28:09. And Jesus met them and said, "Rejoice!" But they approached him and took hold of his feet and worshiped him.
Mt.28:10. Then Jesus said to them, "Do not fear! Go and report to my brothers to go into Galilee. There they will see me."
Mt.28:11. But when they went, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that happened.
Mt.28:12. And they gathered together with the elders and took counsel. Then they gave a considerable amount of silver to the soldiers.
Mt.28:13. They said, "Say that 'His disciples came at night and stole him while we were sleeping.'
Mt.28:14. And if the ruler hears about this, we will persuade him. And we will make you free from care."
Mt.28:15. But they received the silver and did as they were taught. And this word was spread abroad among the Jews until this very day.
Mt.28:16. But the eleven disciples went into Galilee into the mountain which Jesus appointed for them.
Mt.28:17. And when they saw him, they worshiped him, but they doubted.
Mt.28:18. And Jesus approached them and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on the earth has been given to me.
Mt.28:19. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the holy spirit.
COMMENT: This is still future. There is no record in the book of Acts that the apostles kept this command. Furthermore, in their letters they did not teach other believers to keep this command. This command will be accomplished after they are resurrected for the kingdom period. In the book of Acts, they baptized in the name of Jesus. They never once used the formula, "in the name of the Father and the Son and the holy spirit."
Mt.28:20. Teach them to keep everything that I have commanded you. And know that I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the eon."
